13 Utahns Storm Baltimore at Terrapin Fall Classic

Last weekend, several Utah boys made their way to the lacrosse hub known as Baltimore to compete in the Terrapin Fall Classic. The players were selected to play for the West Coast Starz in the team’s annual fall trip. There were boys from the 2014, 2015 and 2016 classes that had the opportunity to play in front of more than fifty college coaches.
The West Coast Starz is one of the best travel teams in the country and as an organization it invites the best players from California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Minnesota and Western Canada to travel to elite tournaments. The selection of the players invited to play for the West Coast Starz is based on individual performance and evaluation in Adrenaline team tournaments held throughout the summer and winter.
The colleges coaches at the Terrapin Classic were from Johns Hopkins, Maryland, Duke, Colgate, Loyola, UMBC, Georgetown, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Princeton, Air Force Academy, Fairfield, North Carolina, Virginia, Richmond, High Point, Boston University and many more. With only invited teams in attendance, it was an opportunity for many of the players from Utah to be seen by these top coaches and to play against the top players and teams from the East Coast. These teams included the Baltimore Crabs, Long Island Express, Blackwolf, Dukes, Georgetown Prep and Ironhorse.

The weather for the tournament was sunny but very cold and crisp with a breeze from the ocean that cooled everything. Hurricane Sandy had left the Baltimore area relatively unscathed and the fields were in good condition. The 2014 class recorded several goals and assists from Jace Thomas, Grant Pearce and Luke Fairman. Thomas and Fairman were playing first lines and showed quickness and solid defense. Pearce was smart around the crease, sneaking behind defenders, making great catches under pressure and distributing the ball very well. Both Carter Mannix and Mason Barnhill had outstanding defensive showings, each of them shutting down attackmen with Division I college commits to Maryland, North Carolina, Duke and Loyola. Mannix and Barnhill also had highlight reel quality defensive play, including some great checks resulting in caused turnovers, clutch ground balls to clears as well as showing solid man down performances. The 2015 class was well represented on defense with Bo Long and Garrett Bullet drawing a lot of attention from coaches in attendance for their solid position play and stick skills. Long kept many of the attackmen away from the crease and disrupted a number of passes leading to turn overs. Bullet scooped up a dozen ground balls while playing smart, relentless defense. Kolten Atkinson proved to be sure handed and elusive around the crease scoring at critical moments in his games. Bubba Fairman was an all-around asset to his team, running first line and spending most of the game on the field. Bryson Taylor similarly was a critical component of his teams defense. He played smart defense and caused several turnovers which led to fast breaks for his team.
On the whole the West Coast Starz teams recorded a record of 31-2-3 on their trip.
Barnhill said, “It was good to come back East and play against the best players that are out here. It gives you a lot of confidence knowing that you can play against whoever steps on the field.”
The Utah players all showed up to play and represented the state extremely well. This weekend showed coaches from across the country that the quality of Utah lacrosse is solid, that the Utah player is smart, athletic and efficient. Given the level of competition at this event, it also shows these coaches that Utah lacrosse develops an excellent caliber of player who is able to play competitive, quality college lacrosse at all levels.
