2013 Boys D-I First Round Match-up Preview

It’s that time of year where everything you have worked for is on the line. Previous records don’t matter. Previous tournaments don’t matter. Previous awards don’t matter. All that matters is the game that stands in front of you. It is “win or go home.” Playoff games come down to three things: Coaching ability, Game plans, and Defense. If you can lock those three things up, see you in the next round, if not, get to work.
Luke Graney Juan DiegoBonneville Lakers @ Juan Diego Soaring Eagle
Bonneville comes into the first round allowing about 10.5 GPG. In order to take down the defending champs the Lakers need to tune up their defense to control the Soaring Eagles. Juan Diego is coming off a big moral win, and literal win, against the Bengals and should use that momentum to run over the Lakers. Look for Alex Croyle for the Lakers to have a big game, as well as the Graney brothers for Juan Diego. The big thing is to not overlook Bonneville, after all it is “win or go home” and anyone one can lose at anytime in the playoffs.
Prediction: Juan Diego 14 Bonneville 4
Judge Bulldogs @ Pleasant Grove Vikings
I like this match-up a lot. It puts an offensive powerhouse Pleasant Grove team against a solid defensive team in Judge. I do think that in playoffs that defense wins games. In order for Pleasant Grove, who is averaging 11 GPG, to win this match-up they will not only need to find space to score against Judge but also will need their defense to hold strong. I like Judge in this match-up due to experience and history, after all Judge was one of the first two teams created in Utah.
Prediction: Judge 11 Pleasant Grove 8
Riverton Silverwolves @ Alta Hawks
The Hawks find themselves in need of momentum. The question is did their win against Davis recently help gain the momentum needed to get by a strong Riverton squad? One thing that I really like about Alta is their spread scoring load. I believe that having 5-7 players that can score at will is key to playoff success. I find Riverton needing more experience in order to upset the Hawks and more of a consistent defensive effort.
Prediction: Alta 13 Riverton 6
Jordan Beetdiggers @ Bountiful Braves
These two teams are more evenly matched than most people think. They both have had great competition all year long and grown immensely. The issue I find in Jordan is their lack of offensive scoring power. Bountiful does not have that issue, but their defense struggles to remain solid through the entirety of the game exist. This game should come down to the wire if both teams can put together a strong enough game plan. Look for Chandler Wescott to have a monster game for Bountiful. I do think that this has upset written all over it for the Beetdiggers if they can get their offense going early.
Prediction: Bountiful 9 Jordan 8
Bingham Miners @ Lone Peak Knights
The very first game of Lone Peak’s season saw this same match-up with Lone Peak winning 14-12. After an entire season for both teams it will be intriguing to see how much each team has grown. Lone Peak has gone on to have an undefeated season while Bingham has had highs and lows. This game is the time for Lone Peak to make a name for itself and gain the respect that it has been wanting across the league. Bingham has a chance to pull off a crazy upset. I do think this game will come down to coach’s game plans. They both need to find a way to maintain a solid defense while pressing hard offensively.
Prediction: Lone Peak 15 Bingham 11
Spanish Fork Warriors @ Park City Miners
Park City is coming into playoffs after losing 5-7 last games. Spanish Fork comes in solid with plenty momentum. I think that losing to a D-II team, Waterford, will light the fire that Park City needs to excel in this first round. Spanish Fork has not had any lopsided lost games besides the Juan Diego game. They have held tough every loss and continued to get stronger. I do think that we will see this upset and Spanish Fork coming out on top.
Prediction: Spanish Fork 9 Park City 8
Olympus Titans @ Davis Darts
These two teams met once this season with Olympus winning 13-6. Davis has grown from that game on to dominate its competition and barely losing its last game to Alta. Olympus has been more mercurial than teams thought they would be but I do see Walker Bateman as the X factor. I believe with his coaching ability and team fire Olympus will come out on top.
Prediction: Olympus 13 Davis 11
Viewmont Vikings @ Brighton Bengals
Viewmont has had a tougher year than they had hoped only winning 4 games. They have only played one team of Brighton’s caliber, Lone Peak, and should be in for a great game where they can gain much experience. I just don’t see Brighton losing this game. They are too hot offensively and too in sync defensively. This Brighton team does need stronger game plans in order to advance further. I would love to see Brighton do more scouting and game plan against Lone Peak, who I believe they will meet, and eventually Juan Diego. I do pick this Bengal squad to win it all this year.
Prediction: Brighton 15 Viewmont 5

  1. These are my picks.
Juan Diego, PG, Alta, LP, Bountiful, SF, Davis Davis Davis!, and Brighton. I think there has been too much inconsistency in Judge’s game to beat PG. I’d love Riverton to win, but the rebuild needs one more year to be complete. LP will beat Bingham, but it will be as close as the first game.
Davis Davis Davis! will beat Olympus. This one is easy. Davis is going to overpower them. SF will cruise if they show up. They’ve played the best teams great and the bad teams horribly. Brighton is the obvious choice.
Bountiful will win, but this game will be the closest game of the first round.
