2013 ULN Staff Game Picks: Week 5

Each week of the high school season we will pick the winners a handful of random games that week. You can join along as well by leaving a comment with your picks. This week will look at the Herriman v. Waterford matchup on Tuesday, the Alta v. Brighton girls rivalry game on Wednesday, the Box Elder v. Idaho Falls game on Saturday and the No. 1 v. No. 2 showdown when Alta plays Juan Diego this Saturday. Pierce Walker is still in the lead with a 11-4 record, Sean Zuckerman and Tim Haslam are tied at 9-6 while Scott Robinson, hot off a 4-0 Week 4, is at 8-7 overall.
Boys: Herriman @ Waterford – Tuesday, 4/2
Pierce Walker: Herriman wins 9-6
I like the Ravens, being a former one myself, but I just don’t see them being able to slow down Herriman’s fast breaks in this one.
Sean Zuckerman: Waterford wins 11-9
I see a great game but I think Waterford will play their best game of the season and pull off the win.
Scott Robinson: Herriman wins 11-7
I believe the key here is the stellar play of Chantz Roberts. He led the Mustangs in goals last year and his having another solid year for Herriman. After just winning play of the week, look for him to have a breakout game and lead the Mustangs to a win over Waterford.
Tim Haslam: Herriman wins 14-8
The Mustangs are too physical and too dangerous at every position which will give them the advantage.
Girls: Alta @ Brighton – Wednesday, 4/3
Pierce Walker: Alta wins 16-3
The Hawks are coming along strong and look to push hard come playoffs. Brighton continues to slip and should get ran over in this matchup.
Sean Zuckerman: Alta win 12-11
This will be a great game since it is a rivalry but look for Alta to come away win the win.
Scott Robinson: Alta wins 17-5
Alta has been improving as the year has gone on. Having had the chance to watch them play a tough Park City team in person, I am impressed with Alta. They have a little ways to go and a few things to improve on but this team is solid. Brighton is struggling this year and has been mediocre thus far. Look for Alta to win this game in a big way.
Tim Haslam: Alta wins 12-7
Alta continues to play well and are really starting to gel. Brighton will be up for the rivalry game but ultimately fall short.

Boys: Box Elder @ Idaho Falls – Saturday, 4/6
Pierce Walker: Box Elder wins 9-7
Box Elder should be able to pull this one out if their defense can continue to dominate.
Sean Zuckerman: Box Elder wins 7-5
The Bees will get their first win of the season when they take on Idaho Falls. The Bees offense will finally click which will lead them to victory.
Scott Robinson: Box Elder wins 10-5
Box Elder is having a tough season. After a close loss to Fremont and then getting doubled up by a mediocre Timpview team, they are looking to turn this season around. Look for Box Elder to come out on top in this one.
Tim Haslam: Box Elder wins 9-7
Idaho Falls will have a rare home game which will give them the momentum to hang with the Bees for three quarters but Box Elder will ultimately come out on top.
Boys: Alta @ Juan Diego – Saturday, 4/6
Pierce Walker: Juan Diego wins 14-9
First and foremost, my condolences to the Juan Diego community. The Soaring Eagle just got more serious and are playing for far more than a state championship: they are playing for a friend and teammate. Go Juan Diego.
Sean Zuckerman: Juan Diego wins 14-8
The Soaring Eagle is just too good and is playing really well right now. They are unbeatable by any team.
Scott Robinson: Juan Diego wins 15-10
What a fun game this should be. No. 1 v. No. 2. Alta is tough and looks to be a solid team this year but Juan Diego is loaded with talent. Juan Diego has the top four scorers in the Sandy Conference in Matthew Graney, Nick Grogg, Tommy Maddox and Luke Graney. Alta is good but Juan Diego has too many weapons. Look for Juan Diego to win this game.
Tim Haslam: Alta wins 12-11
Yep, you read it right. Do I think Juan Diego is the best team in the state? I do. However, this has all the makings of an upset, if you can call the No. 2 beating the No. 1 an upset. Juan Diego will be coming off 3 games in a row in Nevada against Palo Verde, Henderson and Centennial. Four games in 5 days plus travel is tough for any team.

Let’s hear it fans. What are your predictions for the week?
