2013 ULN Staff Picks: Championships

This week we take a look at a handful of first round playoff match-ups. We take a look at the Jordan @ Bountiful, Olympus @ Davis, Judge @ Pleasant Grove, Timpview @ Skyline and Orem @ Waterford. Pierce Walker and Scott Robinson are tied at 26-11 while Tim Haslam is 4 games back at 22-15.
Girls D-II: American Fork Cavemen v. Lehi Pioneers
Pierce Walker: American Fork wins 11-7
Lehi has had a spectacular run but experience and consistency will payoff for American Fork in this championship game. I look for Lehi to struggle in the finals against a solid AF defense.
Scott Robinson: American Fork wins 10-8
I have picked against Lehi all post season and they have been determined to prove me wrong. I will once again pick against the Pioneers. American Fork comes into this game with too many weapons. American Fork beat Lehi in the regular season but this isn’t the same Lehi team. If the Lady Cavemen think this will be the same, they will get beat.
Tim Haslam: Lehi wins 9-8
I’m going to go with the hot team right now and I think that is Lehi. They are at full strength and playing very well. It will be a great game either way.
Girls D-I: Park City Miners v. Skyline Eagles
Pierce Walker: Skyline wins 13-11
Skyline looks poised to win it this year. Park City is good, no doubt, and Coach Amy is a solid coach, but they have issues finishing games lately. Last year they weren’t able to finish the game against Bingham and I expect Skyline to play great all game.
Scott Robinson: Park City wins 11-10
Skyline beat Park City in the regular season to take the number one seed. Park City dominated Bingham in the second round while Skyline had an easy time of Riverton. I think Park City will by high of their win over Bingham and they come out and get a victory.
Tim Haslam: Skyline wins 10-9
I think the Eagles will win in this epic showdown. The difference will be in the midfield where Skyline has a slight edge.
Boys D-II: Waterford Ravens v. Syracuse Titans
Pierce Walker: Waterford wins 10-8
Can’t pick against my former squad. Plus they look really really good. Go Ravens!
Scott Robinson: Waterford wins 10-9
Waterford is playing well and is back in the state championships for the second year in a row. Syracuse has played very well, beating a good Herriman team and is in the state championship for the first time in program history. I look for Waterford’s experience to get the best of the Titans in this one.
Tim Haslam: Syracuse wins 12-8
Syracuse beat the Ravens in the regular season at Waterford, something that doesn’t happen often. I think Connor Meyer will lead the Titans to victory in just their second year of play.
Boyd D-I: Juan Diego Soaring Eagle v. Lone Peak Knights
Pierce Walker: Juan Diego wins 14-12
Game of the year. The reason why I give the tilt to JD is because they have been here before, a lot. They are a veteran team that won’t get rattled in this game. They known how to win and how to dominate in the playoffs and especially the finals.
Scott Robinson: Juan Diego wins 12-10
Lone Peaks high powered offense has propelled them into the championship. Juan Diego has been solid on both sides of the ball all year long. I think this game comes down to the Soaring Eagle defense. If they hold strong, they should be able to get a victory here.
Tim Haslam: Lone Peak wins 12-11
It’s great to see the two best teams in the state square off in the final game with all the marbles on the line. I’m going to go with Lone Peak to get the win. They are representing more then just Lone Peak, they are representing the South and all the naysayers who said they wouldn’t. They have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
