2014 ULA Convention Set For This Weekend

Downtown MarriottThe annual Utah Lacrosse Association Chapter Convention will be this Friday and Saturday at the City Creek Marriott in Downtown Salt Lake City (75 South West Temple). The convention will feature classes and speakers for all levels of lacrosse.
The keynote speakers will be Sue Heether and Tim Flynn. Heether was a three sport athlete at Loyola (MD), and was an All-American Goaltender in 1990. She went on to be the USA Goaltender in 1993, 1997 and 2001. On the coaching side, Heether was an assistant at Loyola, Harvard and Notre Dame Prep before taking the head coaching job at Mt. Mary’s College in Maryland. Heether is currently the USA Women’s Head Coach, having been appointed to the position in 2005.
Flynn is currently the Mt. Lakes High School (New Jersey) Head Coach and is entering his 35th year at the helm. Flynn has received numerous awards for his coaching and was also the USA Men’s U-19 Head Coach from 2008-2012. Flynn will be talking about coaching on the international level and his expirence with the US Men’s U-19 team where he won a Gold Medal in Turku, Finland in 2012. Flynn is also excited to talk about the basics of the sport as well as the importance of having youth feeder teams as part of the overall high school program.
On Friday, the festivities will get underway at 6:00pm with a Double Goal Coaching Workshop put on by the Positive Coaching Alliance.
On Saturday, participants will learn from Heether, Flynn, various Parent Reps, Wendell Lee (US Lacrosse), Westminster Defensive Coordinator Garrett McLean, Stats from Annie HerrNeckar, Boise State Women’s Coaches, Laurie Podmilsak (Howard University Lacrosse), Olympus Girls Co-Head Coach Andrew Davies and Sports Filmz Dominic Militello. The afternoon session will provide participants with talks from ULA Executive Director Lisa Schmidt, Westminster Men’s Head Coach Mason Goodhand, Westminster Women’s Head Coach Niki Harding, Eldon Brough (Wasatch Sports Performance), coaches from Utah Men’s Lacrosse,  BYU Men’s Lacrosse and BYU Women’s Lacrosse.
For players, there are two special opportunities for more information about playing college lacrosse. The first session is at 3:00pm on Saturday when Westminster recruiting guru Brad Lavoie and Laurie Podmilsak will lead a discussion for players and parents about ‘Finding Your Fit: What you need to know about varsity college lacrosse’. The next session is at 4:00pm and will be conducted by local colleges and travel team reps. The topic is ‘Recruiting Roundtable: Meet area college and travel team coaches and reps’.
The cost to attended the convention is $45 per person.
