2014 ULN Staff Picks: Week 1

The ULN staff is back and ready to take on each other in the weekly pick’em. This week we will look at Corner Canyon heading to Juan Diego and Sky View taking on Roy. We will also look at the MCLA match-up between Utah and Oregon. Our last game will be a look at the Miner Rivalry between the Park City and Bingham girls teams.
Boys: Corner Canyon @ Juan Diego (3/11)
Bradford Davis – Corner Canyon wins 14-13
Different school name, but the rivalry is still there.  Look for a great, high scoring game with both teams fighting tooth and nail to get a victory.  Even though Juan Diego will have the home field advantage, I am going to give this one to Corner Canyon.  With the offense playing together for so long, I think that will prove the decisive factor in the game.
Paul Walker – Juan Diego wins 9-8
Corner Canyon gained a lot of great players to start out their first year. That being said, Juan Diego won back-to-back state championships. Although they graduated a handful of seniors, they still have the players and coaching staff to take the win, but it will be a close one.
Tim Haslam – Corner Canyon wins 14-10
Corner Canyon is going to give Juan Diego their first home loss since 2011. It won’t be easy, but the experience that Corner Canyon has playing together will lift them past a great Soaring Eagle squad.
Boys: Sky View @ Roy (3/11)
Bradford Davis – Sky View win 13-6
I’ve got to give this win to Sky View in this match up with Roy.  I know what It is like going from JV to varsity, and it’s no easy road.  I think experience, not skill, will prove the determining factor in this one
Paul Walker – Sky View wins 11-7
Sky View had a pretty solid season last year, winning the majority of their games, and coming close in many of their losses. They already have a win over East this season as well. Roy is a first-year team, so they have a lot to prove and will likely fight hard. They may, however, need a few games to get in some experience with varsity play.
Tim Haslam – Sky View wins 12-8
My heart says Roy, but my head says Sky View. The Bobcats went 4-0 in Las Vegas at the Best of the West and beat a good East team last weekend. This is the first game as a varsity team for Roy which could either propel them or deflate them.
MCLA: Utah @ Oregon (3/11)
Bradford Davis – Oregon wins 12-7
Coming into this game, Oregon’s offense is red hot.  Their top scorers have 2x more points per game compared to the Utes top scorers.  I think the offensive pressure will be too much for the Utes’ defense.
Paul Walker – Oregon wins 12-9
Oregon has already dominated in a few games, and also suffered some rough losses. Utah has also played well in a couple games so far, but had one devistating loss to Arizona State. It will be a close game, but Utah will fall short of the win because Oregon’s Brenton Souers really knows how to score.
Tim Haslam – Utah wins 8-7
The Utes will finally find their form and build on a win over Boise State last Sunday. We know Dillon Tran and the Cantrell brothers (Nash and Cody) will score, so the difference here is if David Bicker and Luke Graney can find the back of the net. If they can, it will be a good day for Utah.
Girls: Bingham @ Park City (3/13)
Bradford Davis – Park City wins 11-5
Miners vs. Miners.  I think the loss of over a dozen seniors for Bingham is the pivotal point for this match up.  I think the experience and depth that Park City is bringing will overpower Bingham.
Paul Walker – Park City wins 11-9
Park City had a stellar season in 2013. Bingham was not far behind. The PC Miners are already having a good year so far, with two solid wins over Lone Peak and Jordan. Park City will pull away with the close win.
Tim Haslam – Park City wins 9-4
It’s hard to pick against Park City. They were the favorite to win the championship at the beginning of the season, they won the Best of the West tournament and have beat a tough Jordan team and rolled Lone Peak. Look for their streak to continue.

  1. I was told that the Utes showed up to play at Oregon and the field was astro turf. Most of the players had casual shoes or cleats (which don’t work on astro turf)… slight field advantage for Oregon I’d say
