2014 ULN Staff Picks: Week 8

As the season winds down, there are more and more key match-ups as teams fight for playoffs spots. We’ve broken down some of the best match-ups this week. We predict the scores for the Lehi @ Northridge (boys), Bountiful @ Viewmont (boys), Skyline @ Olympus (girls) and Alta @ Juan Diego (girls) games. A little bit of something for everyone. Paul Walker has taken the lead after going 3-0 last week and comes in at 20-8. Bradford Davis and Tim Haslam are tied at 19-9. Friend of the site, Jeff Brzoska, who has been playing along via the comments stands at 19-9. Don’t forget to leave your predictions in the comments below.

Boys: Lehi @ Northridge (4/30)
Bradford Davis: Lehi wins 16-12
This is an important game for playoff seeding and the Pioneers will use that to play as a team and get the win.
Paul Walker: Northridge wins 11-9
The Knights are playing well right now. They are scoring more often and allowing less points that the Cowboys and will win this match-up
Tim Haslam: Northridge wins 12-6
Northridge will feed of the hometown crowd and get the key win with playoff implications on the line.
Boys: Bountiful @ Viewmont (4/30)
Bradford Davis: Bountiful wins 15-13
This should be a really good game. Viewmont is going to come out swinging with their quick give-and-go’s. Bountiful is going to rely on dominating at face off and offensive pressure from the attack. Should be a great game. Braves will come away with a win.
Paul Walker: Bountiful wins 12-10
The Braves know how to score points, lots of points. The Vikings will be good competition, but will not be able to overcome Bountiful’s offense.
Tim Haslam: Bountiful wins 12-8
The Braves offense is too potent this year to let this game slip by. The Vikings will hang tough for most of the game but overall the Braves will get the best of their rival.
Girls: Skyline @ Olympus (5/1)
Bradford Davis: Olympus wins 9-7
Another great rivalry. The Skyline-Olympus rivalry is one of the best in the state, and I think that will carry over to the field this Thursday.  Both teams are already playing very similar, and I think that will come to a head in this game. I’ve got to chalk this one up to the home team.
Paul Walker: Olympus wins 9-8 in OT
Skyline is good, but not quite as good as they were last year. Olympus is playing a bit better right now and will take the win in overtime.
Tim Haslam: Skyline wins 10-8
I’m going to go with the Eagles in this one. They have a ton of momentum after their last few games: an overtime win over Jordan and hanging within four goals of Park City.

Girls: Alta @ Juan Diego (5/1)
Bradford Davis: Juan Diego wins 13-10
The Soaring Eagle have been the surprise team this season and have been tough to beat which is why they’ll get the victory here.
Paul Walker: Juan Diego wins 10-9 in Sudden Death
This is going to be a close match-up and will be a fight to the finish. Juan Diego girls have home field advantage and will win this one.
Tim Haslam: Alta wins 10-8
I need to make up some ground on Bradford and Paul so I’m going with the Hawks on this one who will want to win to get a better playoff seed.

Totals 19-9 20-8 19-9

  1. I don’t know anything about the boys teams, so I’ll pass on those. Last night’s Skyline vs PC game was way more close than the score indicates. Skyline was up by 4 goals in the 1st half and even late in the 2nd half they were only down by 1 goal before PC scored 3 goals in the last 5 minutes. Skyline had a very real chance to win that game.
    Given that, my predictions are:
Skyline 12-8 over Olympus, Alta 10-8 over JD.

  2. Skyline is playing well but they haven’t played a defense like Olympus yet. They are very good and might give a settled skyline attack some trouble. If skyline can get some early goals on fast break, they can get a win. I see Olympus winning 11-9. Juan Diego is very good offensively, they have a lot girls who can score. Alta has been very inconsistent. I see Juan Diego getting a win 13-9.

    1. Statistically that doesn’t bear out. if you look at the standings on ULA, Brighton and Park City have all have given up less goals than Olympus over the same amount of games with common opponents. Park City has only given up more than 8 goals one other time this season, against Juan Diego. Additionally no other team has put up more than 8 goals against Brighton all year long to boot….
… and Skyline put 12 on Brighton and 10 on Park City. I think Skyline will be just fine with Olympus’ defense.

      1. If you watch Olympus play, few teams, with the exception of park city, have been able to score a lot of points on their settled defense. Most of their goals against have come in transition and come in fast break opportunities. Both Brighton and park city are better at stoping fast breaks. Statistically, they are not the best defensively. But how they play is different. If Annie and Mo can get points in transition, I like their chances.
