2018 Girls Division I First-Round Recap

#12 Alta at #5 Weber

Weber beat Alta by the score of 9-4.  Weber had a balanced offense attack in the first half as they had 4 different goals scoring the first 5 goals to take a 5-2 lead into halftime.  Alta’s offense was kept at bay as they were only able to score 2 goals in each half of the game. Weber again had a balanced attack in the second half as they had 3 girls score their 4 goals to win the contest 9-4.

Next up for Weber:  Weber will play at #4 Lone Peak of Friday at 6:00pm

Players of the game:

Hannah Hubbard – Weber

Hannah was instrumental in gaining and keeping possession for Weber.  She had 4 draw controls, 6 ground balls, and 2 caused turnovers.

Makell Brown, Jordan Gundersen – Weber

Makell and Jordan each scored 2 goals apiece for Weber.

Majena Horoba, Eliza Johnson, Jessica Medina, and Cali Ann McDermott – Alta

Mejena, Eliza, Jessica, and Cali Ann each scored one goal apiece for Alta.

 

#11 Juan Diego at #6 Viewmont

Juan Diego pulled off the upset by beating Viewmont by a score of 12-9.  Viewmont started the game strong, taking a 5-1 lead in the first half. Juan Diego closed the gap before halftime to only be down by 2 goals, with Viewmont ahead 7-5.  Juan Deigo flexed their offensive muscles to start the second half as they scored 5 of the next 6 goals to take a 10-8 lead. Viewmont was able to score with 5 minutes left in the game to bring them back within a goal, but Juan Diego was able to score two more insurance goals to win the game 12-9.

Players of the Game:

Ryan Stolfa – Juan Diego

Ryan had a fantastic game as she scored 3 goals and had 4 assists.

Alexis Moratalla – Juan Diego

Alexis scored 4 goals on the night for Juan Diego

Kenadee Hatch – Viewmont

Kenadee had 3 goals and 2 assists to lead Viewmont

 

#10 Bingham at #7 Corner Canyon

Corner Canyon defeated Bingham by the final score of 9-7.  The game was close at halftime as Corner Canyon had a 4-3 lead.  Corner Canyon started to pull away in the second half and had a lead of 9-5 with just under 4 minutes left.  Bingham would make it interesting with two late goals, but Corner Canyon was able to run a stall in the final minute to put the game away.

Next up for Corner Canyon:  Corner Canyon will play at #2 American Fork on Friday at 5:00pm

Players of the Game:

Madi Andrews – Corner Canyon

Madi scored a game high 4 goals, 3 of those goals coming in the decisive second half.  Maddie also collected 5 draws and 5 ground balls.

Venice Lupus and Alayna Ennis – Corner Canyon

Venice and Alayna scored two goals apiece for Corner Canyon.

Paige Barney and Beverly Jones – Bingham

Goalies Paige and Beverly combined for 10 saves on 19 shots on goal for 53% save percentage.

 

#9 Olympus at #8 Riverton

Olympus beat Riverton 9-8 in a nail biter.   These two teams played in the first game of the season with Riverton beating Olympus 13-12 in that March 5th matchup.  Olympus was able to avenge that loss tonight with a one goal win.  Olympus played a strong first half and took a 6-2 lead. Riverton came storming back in the second half and was finally able to tie the game at 8 goals apiece with just under 2 minutes left in the game.  Olympus’s Tatum Meier scored the game winning goal with 1-minute left in the game. Olympus won the next draw and was able to run out the clock.

Next up for Olympus:  Olympus will play at #1 Herriman on Friday at 5:30pm.

Players of the Game:

Tatum Meier – Olympus

Tatum scored 2 goals on the night including the game winner.  She also had 2 assists and 7 draw controls.

Elizabeth Wirthlin – Olympus

Goalie Elizabeth had 7 saves on 15 shots on goal for a 47% save percentage.  She was also patient on the clears and did not record a turnover.

Logan Cook – Riverton

Logan had 3 goals on the night.  She also contributed with 4 ground balls and a caused turnover.
