Alta Outlasts Lehi in One-Goal Thriller

The Lehi Pioneers and Alta Hawks met in the first round of the Class-A girls playoffs and the game did not disappoint. The Hawks struck first, the Pios responded, then took the lead, Alta answered, took the lead back, and back and forth the teams went. When the dust settled with two minutes remaining in the game, Alta found themselves with a two-goal cushion, up 10-8, but Lehi’s Grace Freeman caught a feed on the low wing, turned and stepped past her defender and put a shot past the keeper. With a one-goal game and just a minute to play, the subsequent draw was vital; there was a scrum for the ball, and the Hawks came out with it and were able to run out the clock on Lehi’s season, winning 10-9.
“Lehi’s a good team,” reflected Alta head coach Josh Sullivan, “That was two teams that were pretty even, but we were just able to pull it out at the end…we started making sure we were watching the weak side, watching for the pass, and I felt like our defense was the difference near the end of the game.”
The Hawks got a monster game from Jaida Webster who accounted for nearly half her team’s goals on the afternoon, and McKinan Little and Kennedy Richards tallied two a piece in the victory–Little also putting in work and winning several key draws in the center circle.
The Pioneers were able to keep it close throughout with a strong team effort–seven different players scored–and were led by Kylie Labrum with a hat trick and goalie Tigerlily Jasmer had a strong performance in the cage.
The loss also signaled the end of Lehi head coach Greg Freeman’s tenure with the Pioneers. Coach Freeman was instrumental in building both the boys and girls programs at Lehi. “It’s bittersweet; I’ve had a lot of runs and it’s been really good…go Lehi!”
The Hawks will take on 2-seed Brighton this Friday in the Class-A quarterfinals.

  1. Coach Freeman you will be missed. You are one of the classiest people to ever roam the sidelines of a lacrosse game. Good luck in your new adventures.
