Bingham Starts Slow, Finishes Fast Against Jordan

Bingham and Jordan Face-offThe Bingham girls lacrosse team beat the Jordan Beetdiggers by the score of 16-13 on Tuesday in a battle of Utah’s two top teams this season. Both teams had undefeated regular seasons coming into the game that also settled the No. 1 seed heading into the playoffs.
Jordan came out of the gates on fire, scoring the first three goals of the game. Bingham Head Coach Eliza Hitz quickly called a timeout to stop the Jordan run. The talk must have worked because shortly after, Morgan Judd scored for the Miners to bring the score to 3-1 in favor of Jordan. Jordan was not phased, scoring two more goals to take a 5-1 lead. Judd again found the back of the net for the Miners but Jordan answered right back to bring the score to 6-2 in favor of the Beetdiggers.
The Bingham players took matters into their own hands, scoring seven straight goals to take a 9-6 lead with a minute left in the half. Judd began the run on a free position goal from a shooting space violation. Olivia Winters scored next on a free position goal. Judd scored again when she scooped up a failed Jordan clear near midfield and took it all the way for the goal. Kira Heiden scored next on another free position goal. Karlie Beech, Winters and Brooke Tate finished the run for the Miners. Jordan continued to fight hard and scored right as the halftime whistle sounded, making the score 9-7.
After the break, Beech and Judd scored for the Miners. A Jordan yellow card left the Miners with an extra player, but they were unable to capitalize. Jordan was able to score while short-handed on a free position goal to make the score 11-8 for Bingham. Bingham went on a three goal run to take a 14-8 lead with 12 minutes remaining. Jordan didn’t give up, see-sawing back and forth with Bingham. Jordan put together a small run with 3:41 left to play to bring the deficit to 4, but Jordan was penalized with their fourth yellow card, forcing the Beetdiggers to play man-down the rest of the game. Bingham was able to pass around and kill the clock. The Beetdiggers did steal a goal back with 2 seconds remaining in the game.
“We’ve been preparing for this game all season since we lost to them in the Gathering of the Tribes,” said Hitz. “We know that they play aggressive lacrosse and we needed to stick to our game and it was going to come down to who the tougher team was. We came out tentative. We’ve come from behind against Park City and Riverton. I knew we could come back and we started controlling the draw and played clean, awesome defense.”

“She was one of the only girls that came ready to play,” said Hitz. “She played really well. Karlie Beech took the draw for us today and she did very well and was very effective. She also was face guarding Hayley Erickson and shut her down and took her out of the game.”
Jordan controlled a total of 15 draws while Bingham had 11. Jordan Goalie Sasha McKee had 10 saves while Bingham Goalie Annie VanValkenburg had 7 saves.
Bingham will be the No. 1 seed in the South Conference and will face No. 4 Olympus on Friday. Jordan claimed the No. 2 seed and will host No. 3 Skyline on Friday.
