Boys: No. 3 Alta Stuns No. 1 Brighton In a Thriller

The No.3 Alta Hawks squeaked out a win over the top-ranked Brighton Bengals on Tuesday by a score of 9-8 to stay undefeated against Utah’s best teams.
Senior Midfielder John Franco got the scoring started for Alta with an assist coming from Junior Midfielder Mackay Dunn.  Alta jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after Freshman Midfielder Chase Oviatt scored unassisted. Brightons Senior Attackmen stopped the bleeding on an unassisted goal of his own to make it 2-1.  Franco scored another one by himself to put the Hawks up 3-1 after one.
Both teams played it pretty evenly in the second quarter scoring two goals each.  Senior Midfielder Dillon Tran had two unassisted goals for Brighton.  Franco and Dunn each had a goal in the second for Alta holding on to a two goal lead, 5-3 at the half.  Each team had plenty of chances to score in the second but the Goalies had an exceptional quarter.  Junior Jake Dunn had 7 saves for Alta and Senior Nate Wilkinson had 5 saves for Brighton in the second.
Brighton came out determined to take control in the second half, assaulting Alta on the offensive end.  The Bengals scored 4 goals in the second quarter, allowing only 1 from Alta on an extra man opportunity ending the third with a score of 6-7 Brighton. Altas keeper Dunn had 6 more saves in the 3rd, keeping The Hawks in the game.
Alta turned the tables once more in the third quarter, scoring three straight goals of their own to go up 9-7 on the top ranked Bengals. Brightons Senior Middie Brandon Wall cut the lead to one with about 5 minutes left in the with an unassisted goal.  Alta played Brighton extremely tight in the final minutes though, holding a high-powered offense to only two shots on cage.  Brighton had one last chance with 30 seconds left but a bad pass sent the ball the other way, ending the game at 9-8.
Alta was ecstatic at the end of the game, throwing their gear in the air and surrounding their keeper.  Jake Dunn had 13 saves overall for Alta, no doubt playing a big part of this huge win. Alta Got a great performance from Franco who had 4 goals through the game,  Senior Attackmen Jake Arbon had 1 goal and 1 assist.  Mackay Dunn was the best player on the field Tuesday with 2 goals and 2 assists.  Mackay was a workhorse for the Hawks, showing his blazing speed on clears, and hustle on groundballs. Senior Defender Boston Handley played another good game as well, leading his defense to stifle a great offense.
Brightons goalie Wilkinson had 6 saves for the game.  The Bengals had three players with 2 goals each, Senor Midfielders; Dillon Tran, Brandon Wall, and Jayden Haws. Brighton was out of their element on Tuesday, being outrun by a younger Alta squad.  It looked like The Bengals were playing not to lose rather than fighting for a win.
When asked about Tuesdays big win, Altas Head Coach Todd Handley said, “Awesome game, Brighton is a great team.  We feel very fortunate to win after going back and forth, we knew they’d come back when we got up on them. I’m very proud of our kids.”
Alta moves on to play Lone Peak this Friday, April 8th, 4:30 PM at Alta High School.
Brighton will play Skyline this Friday, April 8th, 4:30 PM at Big Cottonwood Park.
