Boys: West Takes Down Rival East With Strong Finish

The West Panthers defeated the East Leopards on Tuesday by a score of 12-6 behind a stellar 4th quarter.
East versus West is a great rivalry for any sport, but when it is a contact sport it’s a little sweeter.  The game was very physical between the two teams but they showed respect throughout, with very few penalties.
East came out pumped up and ready to run, scoring the first two goals of the game thanks to Freshman Midfielder Michael Anderson and Senior Attackmen Scott Bringhurst.   The Panthers answered back with two scores of their own coming first from Senior Attackmen Brandon Quach and the second by Junior Midfielder Kiefer Corona.
Both teams played the first half back and forth, with neither team dominating any aspect of the game. The Panthers and the Leopards looked to be evenly matched with a score of 4-4 going in to the break after scoring twice more each in the second quarter.
East came out with plenty of energy at the start of the third quarter pushing the tempo again and looking for easy opportunities.  East scored the first goal of the second half to go up 5-4 and capture momentum.  West was not phased one bit, scoring the next two goals to enter the fourth quarter with a 6-5 lead.  There were more than 10 combined turnovers between the teams in the the third, with frequent sloppy passes and avoidable mistakes. East had plenty of chances to answer back, but West’s Senior Goalie Walker Koeven was spectacular, with 4 saves in the third.
West took that one goal lead and exploded in the fourth quarter.  The Panthers scored the next five goals of the game to push the lead to 11-5 before East could even react. West proved to be the better team in the final period but East showed plenty of heart to keep it close through three. Each team scored one more to end the game at 12-6 and put a stamp on another interesting rivalry game.
Scott Bringhurst had the best day for the Leopards scoring 3 goals and 1 assist. Sophomore Midfielder Daniel Anderson had 1 goal and 1 assist with brother Michael recording 1 goal and 2 assists.
Kiefer Corona led the way for West scoring 4 goals and 2 assists with fellow midfielder, Senior Nate Hall recording 2 goals and 2 assists.
Each teams goalie had a decent game with 8 saves a piece. West’s defense had an excellent fourth quarter and completely shut down their opponent, allowing only one shot on goal coming from an extra man opportunity.
When asked about who stepped up, West’s head coach Josh Hanks said, “Nathan Feller was getting lots of ground balls, and actually had a goal in the fourth quarter which was huge for us. Our other defender Andrew Barrett had quite a few clears and ground balls, so our defense really stood out in this game.”
West moves on to play Mountain Crest  on Friday April 1, at 4:30 PM at Mountain Crest High School in Hyrum.
East plays Box Elder on Saturday April 2, at 10:30, at Constitution Park in Brigham City.
