Brighton Beats Corner Canyon, Spoils Debut

Brighton BengalsIt was a rainy one in Draper as the Brighton Bengals took on the Corner Canyon Chargers. The Chargers started their first ever regular season game well. They got off to a great start and went up one early on a score by Karli Bird. Corner Canyon controlled the next draw and went right down and had a goal called back due to a dangerous follow through. This lead to Brighton’s first possession of the game. The Bengals weren’t going to let the opportunity slip away as they were able to transition down the field and Tiffiny Wallace was able to tie the score at one. Wallace controlled the next draw and notched another goal less than a minute later. Shelby Madden was able to slot one home for Corner Canyon to tie the game back at two. Brighton and Corner Canyon went back and forth the entire half and went into half 7-6 in favor of Brighton.
The second half started with Brighton scoring the first goal and they didn’t look back. The Bengals scored the next four goals before Corner Canyon was able to get one. The game ended 12-7 in favor of the Bengals. Brighton finished out the game only allowing two shots on goal in the second half.
Corner Canyon goalie Dakota Halford finished with one save. Brighton goalie Taylor Hekking finished with seven saves.
“Taylor Hekking had a 58% save percentage and our defense stepped up and played extremely well in the second half. Amy Johnston, Mary Barton and Lauren Beckstrand all played very well on defense,” said Brighton Head Coach Kendra Francis. “I think that Brighton is really coming together. I’m glad we are able to figure things out early so that we can be where we need to come playoffs.”
Madden and Sabrina Baldasdari scored two apiece for the Chargers. Tiffiny Wallace was the leading scorer with seven goals for the Bengals.
“Tiffiny has become a huge offensive threat. She used to be a passer but she has become a major asset for us,” mentioned Francis.
The Bengals will host Herriman on March 11 while the Chargers will head to Park City on the same day.
