Brighton Dodges Darts, Wins 11-5

Brighton Bubba FairmanThe Brighton Bengals and Davis Darts squared off at Jordan High School on a snow covered field. Both teams were able to overcome the elements and played a great game, but Brighton ultimately came out on top with the 11-5 win.
Brighton opened the scoring midway through the first quarter when Scott Bunker caught the ball with his back toward the goal, spun and shot underhand into the back of the net. The Bengals won the ensuing face-off and were able to score within seconds on a goal by Ashton Schmidt. Brighton had the majority of the possession in the first quarter that ended with a 2-0 Bengal lead.
Brighton scored again when Bailey Pope notched his first goal of the night. Davis returned the favor when they scored two quick goals by Mitch Wilkes and Kyle Gee. Schmidt and Caden Folkersen scored for Brighton to take a 5-2 lead with under 2 minutes left in the half. Davis Attackmen Dillon Yocom brought the Darts within 2 with 30 seconds left in the half, keeping the hopes alive for Davis.
Davis scored first in the second half on a coast-to-coast goal by Michael Poole to make the score 5-4 for Brighton. The Bengals kicked it into high gear and reeled off 5 goals over 10 minutes to take a 10-4 lead in a run that would seal the fate of the Darts. Freshman Bubba Fairman was instrumental in the run, scoring 3 and assisting on the other two goals. Davis scored with 6:10 left in the game but the Bengal defense continued to play lock down defense. Brighton would get their last goal with 1:30 left in the game, closing out the 11-5 victory.

“We stuck with what we do and with what works for us,” said Brighton Head Coach Brandon Horoba. “We had some great looks and good opportunities. Ashton Schmidt and Bubba Fairman played very well for us today. Logan Whipple was all over the field for us tonight and our whole defense was outstanding.”
Schmidt and Fairman had 3 goals and 2 assists each. Brighton Goalie Quinton Mathie had 11 saves while Davis Goalie Jacob Jones registered 16 saves including a point-blank stuff in the third quarter after the Brighton attackmen did several fakes on the crease. The Davis face-off crew won 13 of 18 face-offs.
