PHOENIX—The No. 2 BYU Men’s Lacrosse team (7-0) narrowly defeated No. 24 Grand Canyon University (3-3) 13-12 Thursday night.
The Cougars played a strong game against a talented Grand Canyon University Team.  The young Cougar squad struggled in gaining momentum as they were playing man-down for what equated to one full quarter of the game.  They ended the game with 15 minutes of penalties compared to only 3 minutes of penalties for the Antelopes.
BYU sophomore Nick Stevens believes that one of the team’s strengths is their ability to fight to the end and credits its win to that.
“We had some ups and downs,” Stevens said.  “We are really good at hanging in there and getting our job done.”
The tone for the game was set early in the first quarter as both teams quickly scored goals.  Senior Mickell Walker scored the first goal for the Cougars.
At the end of the first quarter, the score was 4-3 for BYU.  Other goals for the Cougars were scored by freshman Chase Paulson, senior Jake Ferrin and senior Pat Matheson.
During the second quarter, BYU looked like they might increase its lead but GCU tied the game two times.  At halftime, the score was a 6-6 tie. Goals for BYU during the second quarter were scored by sophomore Mike Fabrizio and sophomore Nick Stevens.
The intensity of the game did not look like it was going to fade away quickly as both BYU and GCU scored goals within the first two minutes of the third quarter.  Freshman Jayden Haws, Ferrin and Walker scored goals for the Cougars during the third with Ferrin and Walker each scoring two.
Heading into the fourth quarter BYU had a two-point, 11-9 lead against GCU.  Goals by Stevens and Haws solidified the game for the Cougars.  With three minutes left, GCU narrowed BYU’s lead to one but great play by BYU’s defense and goalie Rob Ostler also solidified the victory.
The Cougars will next face the Arizona State Sun Devils on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in Arizona. For more information on game location, visit
