PROVO, Utah—The BYU Men’s Lacrosse team has completed the regular season and is now preparing for the 2013 MCLA National Championship Tournament to be held in Greenville, South  Carolina.  The Cougars were informed this evening that they will be entering the tournament as the number 4 seed.
Head Coach Matt Schneck is pleased with the team’s seeding and looking forward to returning to the National Championship Tournament.  “We have been preparing for 9 months to make our return trip to Greenville,” Schneck said.  “We are honored to represent BYU and the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference as one of the best 16 teams in the country vying for the 2013 MCLA National Championship.”
This will be the 17th consecutive appearance at the national tournament for the Cougars.  BYU earned its first National Championship Tournament selection and first National Championship in 1997, the tournament’s inaugural year and has earned a selection every year since.  BYU is on the only team in the country to hold this unique honor.
BYU has played a tough schedule this season and faced more Top 25 opponents than any other team in the country.  BYU finished the regular season with a 14-3 record.
Freshman Chance Cooper says the teams BYU has faced this season has helped prepare them for the tournament.
“This whole season has been preparation for the tournament,” Cooper said.  “Our coaches strategically set up our schedule to prepare us and we have now played almost every team that will be a factor in the tournament.  Though our team is young, we have a lot of fight and I look forward to us hitting our peak at nationals.”
Sophomore Nick Stevens says that as the Cougars prepare for nationals this week it will be a time for them to refocus.
“This next week will be very important in preparing for nationals,” Stevens said.  “We need to learn from our past games, put our mistakes behind us and focus on what’s most important, a national championship.”
The tournament will be held May 13-18 in Greenville, South Carolina.  The Cougars will first face the number 13 seed, Grand Canyon University on Monday, May 13th.  The Cougars beat Grand Canyon University earlier this season in Phoenix, AZ by a score of 13-12.
The Brigham Young University Men’s Lacrosse Team is a proud member of the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA). The Cougars have won four MCLA National Championship Titles – 1997, 2000, 2007 and 2011, and have been honored with more than 100 All-Americans who have proudly worn the Y.
