Centennial (NV), Park City Win in High School Doubleheader

Alec MeyerFollowing the doubleheader at Juan Diego on Friday, Centennial (NV) took on Juan Diego and Park City faced Palo Verde (NV) at Juan Diego on Saturday afternoon.
In the first game, Centennial found the back of the net at the 8:21, 5:30 and 1:15 marks in the first quarter and looked to be on a path towards a rout. Juan Diego was able to answer with 7 seconds left in the quarter when Bo Long scored an elusive goal. In the second quarter, Alex Meyer, Ryan Green and Austin Roberts tallied goals for the Soaring Eagle, giving them a 4-3 lead with 2:29 left in the first half. Centennial tied the game at the 1:44 mark but Jack Maddox found the back of the net with 21 seconds left to give Juan Diego a 5-4 lead at halftime.
Centennial tied the game midway through the third quarter and took the lead at the 7:26 mark. Juan Diego would go on a small, two-goal run to regain the lead with 3:22 left in the third quarter, but that would be the last scoring Juan Diego would do as Centennial scored with 14 seconds left to make the score 7-7 at the end of the third quarter. Centennial continued to fight, scoring three more goals to give them a 10-7 win.
Ryan Green led the Soaring Eagle with 2 goals. Bo Long, Alec Meyer, Austin Roberts, Jack Maddox and Ryan Baker each had one goal. Juan Diego won 8 of 12 faceoffs. Goalie Brendan Roberts had 5 saves in the first half while Sean Edwards had 9 saves in the second half.
Jackson BurtonIn the second game, Park City and the Palo Verde Panthers played a thrilling game. The Pathers jumped out to a 3-0 lead with goals from Isaac Young and Chase Bradshaw. Park City pulled one back with a goal by Chase Flinders but it was answered by Bradshaw. Cole Flinders made the score 4-2 for Palo Verde at the 2:49 mark in the first quarter, but again, Palo Verde answered with a goal by Young, making the score 5-2 after the first quarter. Palo Verde would add another goal in the second quarter and take a 6-2 lead into halftime.
After the break, the Park City offense ignited and was sparked by a goal at 11:29 by Carson Dutkanych. Palo Verde scored again but then the Miners went on a three-goal run within three minutes to make the score 7-6 for the Panthers after the third quarter. Palo Verde would score out of the break, but Park City answered with two goals in 34 seconds, tying the game at 8 with 9 minutes to play. The nerves of each team were tight and both teams played well, getting good looks on goal. At 4:46, the Panthers pulled ahead but Park City tied it back up at 3:13 on a goal by Dutkanych. The game-winning goal came at 1:18 when Chad Merrick found Tucker Mirams who slotted it home, giving Park City a 10-9 win.
“They are a great team and we were glad to hang with them and get the last goal,” said Park City Head Coach Andy Langendorf. “It really could have gone either way. It’s good to win these close games so that we know we can later in the season when we really need to.”
Christian Pompoco led Park City with 3 goals and an assist. Merrick had 1 goal and 2 assists. Dutkanych finished with 2 goals and the Flinders brothers, Jack Mintz and Tucker Mirams had 1 goal each. Jackson Burton won 19 of 23 face-offs. Sheridan Buchholz had 15 saves.
Juan Diego will face Bingham on April 23 while Park City takes on Davis on April 21.
