Corner Canyon Defeats Park City For First Win in Program History

For those involved in the Corner Canyon lacrosse program, this day has been a long time coming. The first regular season game in program history went as planned as the Chargers beat Park City 13-7 on a historical night.
“It feels great,” said Corner Canyon Head Coach Mark Davis. “It was a complete game all around. I couldn’t have asked for anything more.”
The game was very evenly matched in the first half. Corner Canyon scored right of the bat when Chandler Stranc scored the first goal in Corner Canyon lacrosse history. Corner Canyon Attackman Cole Parkinson tacked on the second goal at the 10:10 mark to give the Chargers the lead. Park City answered at the 9:32 mark on a goal by Chad Merrick. Parkinson would again find the back of the net when Garrett Michaeli scooped up a loose ball, cleared the ball to Harry Waddops who found Parkinson who buried it in the back of the net for the goal. The Miners would fight back and get two goals before the quarter ended from Christian Pompoco and Carson Dutkanych.

Stranc started the scoring in the second half to give the Chargers the one goal lead. Park City would score next on a clinical fast-break that looked just like a practice drill when Dutkanych got the ball at the top of the ‘L’, passed it to Jack Mintz who then found Kolton Atkinson wide open on the crease for the easy goal. The Chargers scored next on a fast-break goal of their own when Garrett Bullet scooped up a loose ball in the defensive end and took it to his own box, found Waddops at the top of the ‘L’ who then found Parkinson across the field who bounced it in for his third goal of the night. Park City would tie the score with 1:16 left in the quarter when Dutkanych fired a mean low to high rip for the goal.
The halftime break proved to beneficial for Corner Canyon and devastating for Park City. The Chargers scored six unanswered goals in the third quarter, giving them a comfortable 11-5 lead heading into the fourth. Goals by Waddops, Davis Zwicky, Max Asay, a face-off win, drive and goal by Zack Franckowiak and a coast-to-coast goal by Michaeli deflated the Miners hopes for a marquee win. The fourth quarter continued to be a one-sided affair with Corner Canyon scoring early on a goal by Zwicky and then the Chargers went into cruise control. The Miners were able to get two goals back with 1:34 and 1:12 remaining, but it was too little, too late. Chargers Attackman Ryan Hansen tacked on a goal with 47 seconds left to close out the game.
“Kade Arbon played wonderful today,” said Davis. Arbon was making his first varsity start in goalie for the Chargers and tallied 12 saves. Corner Canyon was outstanding in the clearing game, successfully clearing 19 of 20 tries.
The lone bright spot for Park City was at the face-off X with Jackson Burton winning 18 of 23 face-offs.
Corner Canyon will host Viewmont at 7pm on Friday while Park City will play their next game in two weeks on March 18 at Olympus.
