Corner Canyon Edges Brighton in Top Tier Shootout

In a game with playoff implications that only LaxPower understands, the Corner Canyon Chargers beat rival Brighton on Friday night by the score of 10-9 in Draper.
Chargers attackmen Harrison Waddoups stole the show, notching three goals and one assist including the first and game-winning goals for Corner Canyon. However, the game started with Brighton getting a two goal advantage early on with goals from Scott Bunker and Kaden Garden. Corner Canyon answered with five straight goals: the opening goal from Waddoups, Davis Zwicky, Garrett Bullett on a man-up opportunity, Max Franckowiak on a great wrap around from X and Zack Franckowiak. The Bengals roared right back though with a great goal from defender Aaron Nakamura who went uncovered on a clear and then Miles Paulson scored on a great inside roll dodge to make the score 5-4 for Corner Canyon. Haden Trudo scored on an alley dodge for the Chargers to bring the score to 6-4 at halftime.

Brighton scored three goals in the third quarter to gain the lead. The scoring started with Bobby Paulson then Miles Paulson added a great bounce shot from GLE then Hunter Albert gained the lead for the Bengals when he faked a pass down the alley that made the defense lose their balance. Albert took advantage, finding space and bouncing it in for the goal.
In the fourth quarter, attackmen Matt Graney tied the game on a worm-burner from 15 yards out. Waddoups regained the lead for the Chargers on a wrap around and roll dodge for the goal. Brighton equalized though at the 4:10 mark when Miles Paulson scored off a restart. Corner Canyon won the ensuing faceoff when Bullett scooped up the loose ball and led the slow break, finding Zack Franckowiak who scored to give the Chargers a one goal lead. Tennison Schmidt scored for Brighton just a few minutes later to tie the game at 9. Waddoups found the back of the net at the 1:25 mark from an outside shot that ended up being the game-winning goal. Corner Canyon goalie Quinton Mathie had 11 saves.
“Both teams played with a lot of heart,” said Corner Canyon head coach Mark Davis. “I love good, close games and competitions. These guys and Park City, it’s a battle every time and we came ready to play. It feels so good to walk off this field with a ‘W’ against Brighton. This was a good team win.”
The Chargers will close out their season this week against Skyline and Juan Diego. Brighton will take on Olympus and Park City.
