Corner Canyon Tops Bountiful to Remain Undefeated

Corner Canyon - BountifulThe Corner Canyon Chargers and the Bountiful Braves were both undefeated going into this match. However the Chargers came out on top in a heated battle of scoring streaks between these two top caliber teams. The Chargers earned the victory with a final score of 10-9 over the Braves.
Chandler Stranc for the Chargers came out swinging in the first quarter.  He got two goals within minutes of each other to put Corner Canyon ahead 2-0.  Bountiful’s Chandler Wescott replied quickly with a shot that put them on the scoreboard.  This would be their only goal in the first half.
Corner Canyon then went on a 5 goal scoring streak, while shutting down the Braves completely.  Zach Franckowiak of the Chargers scored with 4 minutes left by somehow dodging through the entire Brave defense and putting it past goalie Dalon Hampshire.  Two minutes later, Stranc initiated a dodge from X and drew the defender, leaving Max Asay wide open for a quick stick in to finish off the second quarter 7-1 Chargers.
Bountiful has plenty of opportunities, but were plagued by offsides calls; 6 in the first half.  Jace Thomas, the Braves face-off specialist, at this point is dominating at the X.  He goes on to win 21 out of the 23 face offs in the match.
Corner Canyon was dominating in the transition game.  Their rides and clears were carried out very well, especially with the help of long pole Garrett Michaeli.  It seemed that whenever he touched the ball, the ride or clear was successful.
At this point, it looked to be a blow out.  The second half, however, was the complete opposite.  The Braves started dominating the transition game, while the Chargers were plagued with penalties.
Bountiful came out in the 3rd quarter with two quick goals.  One from Cam Redmond with a nice low to high shot, followed by a goal from Brock Jeppson.  The Chargers answered with Michaeli scoring off of a great fast break to make the score 8-3 with 8 minutes left in the quarter.  The Chargers scored again with a great feed from Casey Rose, who dodged down the left side and found Jason Adams on the opposite side of the goal wide open.  The Braves notched up 2 more goals to bring the 3rd quarter to an end with a score of 9-5.
Bountiful again opened up on fire, with a 4-0 scoring streak in the first 9 minutes of the quarter.  A majority of these goals coming from man-up situations.  With 11 minutes remaining in the 4th, Bountiful’s Redmond rocked back and forth on the GLE, and found Wescott behind the goal on the opposite side.  Wescott creeped up to GLE and snuck one in top pipe.  With 4 minutes left in the game, the Charger’s lead had now been eliminated, and they were all tied up at 9-9.  Midfielder Casey Rose of the Chargers stepped up to the challenge to end the Braves’ rally.  Rose had a great time and room shot that seared the back of the net to put Corner Canyon up by one with 3 minutes left.  After many tries to score, on both sides, the final horn blew giving the Chargers the victory over the Braves.  Final score 10-9.
In regards to the on the on/off play by his team, Corner Canyon Head Coach Mark Davis commented that, “the first half was phenomenal, I couldn’t have asked for a better first half.  The second half was not so great. Bountiful is a great team.  They’ve got shooters, they’ve got players.  Jace at the face off, he’s phenomenal.  It’s hard to compete with that.  We just kind of lost the target a little bit in the second half and started thinking we already won the game at halftime.”
Corner Canyon has a full schedule next week, with Lone Peak on Tuesday and Brighton on Friday.  Bountiful also has tough games, with Alta on Wednesday and Lone Peak on Friday.
