The Stories That Matter Most To The Utah Lacrosse Community

East High Hires New Head Coach

Ryan CantwellRyan Cantwell has taken over as head coach for the East High Leopards. Cantwell started playing in 2001 in the Bingham program. After graduating, he went on to play colligate ball at Utah Valley University. After 4 years of playing, he took a coaching position at UVU and coached alongside Kevin Perkins, who is now the head coach at Alta. Cantwell attributes his love for the sport to the coaches he has been played with.
“Kevin Perkins is one of the best coaches I’ve been around,” said Cantwell. “He taught me how to create a positive atmosphere for the guys to grow both as students and athletes. I want to help my team become the best individuals they can be. When they are not on the lacrosse field I want them to set good examples and be great at whatever they are doing. I believe that if you create that mindset then it will translate into success on the field.”
Cantwell is the perfect example of giving back to the sport, something that is needed very much in Utah. The East program has gone through a recent growing period thanks to many volunteers who have stepped up. Cantwell is joining a program that has a lot of potential over the next few years
“I have to say the most exciting thing for me is to still be a part of this great sport. I am fortunate to be available for the opportunity to coach and I am very thankful to Rusty Vetter and the East parent board for giving me this opportunity,” he said.
East is in the same conference as Copper Hills, Highland, Skyline, West Jordan, and the defending champions, Waterford. It is a powerful conference, and East is ready for the challenge.
