The Stories That Matter Most To The Utah Lacrosse Community

The Face-off: Week 4 – Davis v. Francis

The Face-off (formerly known as ULN Staff Picks) is back and in a slightly different format. We used to ask a few staff members to submit their picks each week, but The Face-off will now feature Team Haslam v. Team Nelson. Tim Haslam and Steve Nelson will pick a person in the lacrosse community to pick for their team. This week will feature Bradford Davis (Team Haslam) and Mitch Francis (Team Nelson).

Davis was part of the inaugural Bountiful team in 2003 and has remained around the sport since. He kept busy with Men’s leagues writing, coaching youth and writing for Men’s leagues. Avid fan of the Maryland Terps. Francis played attack for Lone Peak and UVU.  He also coached Westlake for 3 seasons.
Boys
Bountiful @ Viewmont
BD: No better games than cross-town rivalries!  The defensive stats are relatively equal, so let’s look offensively.  Looking at the average shots on goal per game for the teams, Bountiful is at 37 and Viewmont is at 14.  The Braves’ offensive power will be too much for the Vikings solid D. 12-6 Braves.
MF: Two teams with very similar records against similar opponents. Its a tough one to call especially since this should have some playoff seeding implications so it could be hard to tell who will come out wanting it more. I am going with Viewmont who is riding a two game winning streak vs Bountiful’s three game losing streak. Viewmont by 3.
Syracuse @ Roy
BD: I’ve gone back and forth on this one.  Roy’s record is harsh, but they have put of good fights against some tough teams.  Each team has played 4 top 10 teams, and Syracuse has performed better.  But the numbers don’t lie.  (It worked for Billy Beane and the A’s)  Roy leads in GB per game, shots per game, and Face off’s won.  It’ll be close, but Roy will win, 11-9.
MF: Roy’s record is deceptive due to 4 one goal loses and one 2 goal, which with some more luck might have gone their way. Syracuse on the other hand has 2 more wins and many of their losses have come from some of the top teams in the state. I am giving this one to Syracuse in a tough close game. Titans win 14-12.
Girls
Davis @ Roy
BD: This will be a great game between two teams that are looking to prove their position in the league.  I think this will be a game of ‘Who has the better Goalie’.  Statistically speaking, that is Davis, but will Roy’s have an amazing game?  Possibly, but I’m going to give this one to Davis.  9-6 Darts.
MF: With very similar records against very similar teams this is a hard one to choose. I am going to have to go with Roy who has won their last 3 games in deciding fashion. Roy by 3.
Sky View @ Timpview
BD: This is a great match up and a good opportunity for Sky View to clench their second W of the season.  However, I don’t think it will be this game.  I am going to give this one to Timpview, 13-7.
MF: With 3 more wins and one of them being  a big win against a wasach who Sky View lost to has me choosing Timpview by 5.
College
BYU v. CSU
BD: This is a great match up between two powerhouse teams. BYU is at 10-4 on the season, CSU is 10-3.   The last time they met, CSU won 10-6.  That game was played when BYU was in a slump and CSU handed them their 3rd loss in a row.  They want revenge and I think they are playing well enough to get it.  Look for a close match, maybe even overtime, but the Cougs will win it, 11-10.
MF: This should be a fun one as BYU boast’s one the the conference’s best offense’s and CSU has the best defense in the conference so seeing who come out on top between those two will be fun. CSU beat BYU earlier this month in a 10-6 win in Fort Collins. With this game in Salt Lake that favors the much shorter drive for BYU. BYU is also coming off important instate wins over Utah Valley and University of Utah, whereas CSU closed out the season with a loss to Colorado. I have BYU winning a close 1-2 goal game.
