Collin Madsen would come away with a big face-off victory to secure a final shot for the Griffins in regulation. After a shot from Kyle Postler went high, Westminster took a timeout with 11 seconds remaining to set-up a final play. Fairman took possession from behind the cage and then forced his way to the front of the net to level the game at 10-10 with just five seconds left in regulation.
After Madsen won the opening face-off of overtime, it was again Fairman that delivered for the Griffins. This time working from the right side, the sophomore attacked and fired a shot from 15 yards out that beat the Gauchos goalie and scored the win for Westminster.
Fairman scored three of his four goals in the final 4:25 of the game including overtime. He took a team-best 10 shots in the game with six on goal to record his second four-goal game of the season.
Westminster was outshot in the game 32-31, but they took advantage of two extra-man opportunities where they scored two goals. The Griffins held the Gauchos without a goal in four chances with the man-advantage. UCSB had a 32-24 edge in ground balls and they won 16-of-25 face-offs. Both teams had 12 turnovers and the Griffins went 18-of-20 in clearing chances.
Eric Crosby provided some offensive support for the Griffins with three goals and one assist for a total of four points. Madsen would add two goals with Postler getting one goal and one assist. Chris Burckle would earn his sixth win of the season by making 12 saves in cage.
Bucka led UCSB with those five goals while attempting 10 shots. Sam Simmons won 16-of-25 face-offs and Ryan Walsh picked up seven ground balls.
Westminster will return to action on Friday when they welcome Cal Poly to Dumke Field for a 3 p.m. MDT opening face-off.
