The Alta Hawks girls lacrosse team has once again secured a spot in the 2011 DI State Championship game by beating the Jordan Beetdiggers 19-3 on Wednesday. The Hawks have claimed the Championship trophy the last two years.
“Tonight was a great game for us,” noted Alta Coach Megan Gorringe. “We had tremendous performances from every player on our roster today. It was truly a team effort. We are peaking at the right time this season and we are thrilled about having the opportunity to play for another championship on Saturday.
Spectators witnessed that Alta started out very strong before the game even started. Everything from their loud warm-up stretching, to their loud neon warmup gear, they are intimidating. And these girls are seasoned in the pressure department. They have had all eyes on them for the last few years and are no strangers to the championship game atmosphere. They are clearly a force to be reckoned with.
Jordans’ Hannah Rodgers surprised everyone with a quick goal in the first few minutes of the half. Alta quickly responded with what was the start of a 12 goal run. Junior midfielder Malia Stephens, who was recently named to the 2011 All-American team started the scoring, followed by beautiful goals from Regina Farley, Makenzie Sieverts (4), Hannah Choi, Angie Olsen (2), Nancy Linford, and Shayna Hunt with Stephens assisting several of those goals. There were a few good attempts and runs by the Beetdiggers, but Alta controlled the majority of the ball possession in the first half. Jordans’ Whitney Sieverts had some notable defensive turnovers. The first half ended in a 12-1 lead for the Hawks.
Alta came out strong with two more quick goals from Linford and Hunt. Chersten Ostler for the Beetdiggers snuck a quick goal in the net. But, Alta slowly tallied up for points on the board as the time ran down. Stephens, Farley, Choi, and Olsen each contributed. Jordans’ Sarah Anderson answered back with an exciting goal after such a drought, but one last and final goal by Hawk Hannah Choi put the nail in the coffin for this match. Time expired. 19-3 for Alta.
Stephens, Sieverts, and Choi led the Hawks with three goals each, Farley, Olsen, Linford, and Hunt all had two. Senior Kylie Pace played in goal with seven saves.
For the Beetdiggers, Rodgers, Ostler, and Anderson each contributed a goal. Sasha McKee resided in goal.
Gorringe also noted, “We don’t take these opportunities for granted and we are going to work our hardest between now and then in order to play the best lacrosse we are capable of this weekend. I’m excited for my girls and we look forward to Saturday!”
Alta will challenge Bingham this Saturday at Park City’s Dozier Field at 4:00pm.
