Girls: Judge Defeats West in Opener

Judge Girls Lacrosse opened their 2012 regular season in convincing fashion at McCarthey Stadium, jumping out quickly on the West Panthers in a 15 to 7 victory. The Panthers struggled to get any momentum in the opening stanza, with the Bulldogs taking a comfortable 11 to 2 lead into halftime, allowing Coach Martin to open the sideline floodgates and play the Bulldog pups throughout the second half.
Sophomore middie Liz Lewis ran wild, tormenting the Cats and leading the Dogs in almost every category, including 5 points off a hat-trick and 2 helpers, and 8 gained-possessions garnered from 4 ground balls, 2 caused turnovers, and 2 draw controls. Senior captain Koko Novak led all goal-scorers with 4, and exhibiting great shooting efficiency with Bulldog bull’s-eyes were sophomore middie Sarah Hunt going 3-for-3, junior captain middie Payton Schiff at 2-for-2, juniors Clarissa Avila, Mikala Bland and sophomore Natally Tabish all 1-for-1. Avila added 2 pretty assists from behind the cage, and adding aids were Schiff, senior middie Sierra Gentry, and sophomore attacker Courtney Dockendorf.
On the defensive end, senior Bulldog captain Rachel Benvegnu repeatedly cleared stray Cats out of the middle, and tormented the Panthers for 3 ground balls and 2 caused turnovers. Admirably assisting Cap’n Nu in protecting sophomore Bulldog keeper Hannah Samowitz were freshman goalie Alix Margolis working the d-stick for 2 grounders, and sophomore defender Allegra Imhoff scooping-up 1.  Also fleecing the felines for turnovers were Novak, Bland and Hunt. Gentry added a ground ball as did baby Bulldog freshman Molly Betebenner adding her 1st career notch on the Dog’s stat sheet.
Keeper Samowitz stopped 5 of 12 and intimidated the Cats with her aggressive play outside her circle-of-safety.
Leading the West women in scoring was super-soph Lily Shearon with 4 lamp-lighters, and each dealing a dinger were senior Cheyenne Lubeck, junior Karla Kraiss, and sophomore Blake Bradley.
Next up for the Bulldog women will be 2011’s championship runner-up, the powerful Bingham Miners, traveling to McCarthey Stadium on Thursday, 3/13 @ 5:00
