The Skyline Eagles took the field and upset the Park City Miners Thursday night 13-9.
“This win was a huge weight off our shoulders. After losing to Olympus it was tough to know what we would be in for against PC,” said Skyline Coach Amy Erickson. “Both teams were playing well at the beginning but when we came back from half time you could tell PC was anxious to play better than they had in the first half. Our defense and athletic ability kept them away from the goal, and kept the ball in our possession. It is what got us the win.”
Park City started out with a quick goal from Katie Baker a minute and a half into the contest. The Miners’ Meghan Kellner quickly followed up with another. The game went end to end for a while with errant passes, and great defensive turn-overs by both teams. At 15:37 to go in the half McKlain Huntsman started a five goal run for Skyline with goals by Molly Arnold and Anna Ferreira. An offsides call gave Park City a nice 5v4 advantage set-up and Katie Baker quickly responded back with two goals. Skylines’ Anna Ferreira, Mikelle Stephenson, and Annie Glenn then tacked another goal each the the board in the last two minutes of the half, putting them at an 8-4 lead going into the second half.
Skyline came out in the second half with three more goals by Stephenson, Arnold, and Annie Glenn. With 16:54 remaining on the game, Park City’s Sam Meyer scored off of a beautiful assist by Katie Baker. Less than a minute later, Baker with another assist to Kellner. Skyline made a few attempts in the the scoring area only to meet some great defensive shut-downs by Sierra Schlag and Katie Coleman. At 9:45 to go, Kellner got another point on the board, putting Park City behind 7-11.  Skylines’ Anna Ferreira answered back with a quick goal. And with 6:10 to go Park City’s Katie Baker scored her fourth goal of the game. With the score at 8-12 for Skyline, the game is still anyones game. The game started to get a little more physical, as both teams were scrambling for possession. Skyline was issued two yellow cards, one to Hailey Schiff for a check to the head, and the other McKlain Huntsman for rough play. With Skyline down two players for the remainder of the game, they still managed to maintain possession. Each team… Maddie Haynes for Park City, and Anna Ferreira for Skyline scored another goal in the last two minutes of the match, ending in a 13-9 victory for Skyline.
Ferreira led Skyline with five goals, Arnold with three, Glenn and Stephenson each with two, and Huntsman with one. Morgan Ryan was in goal with six saves.
Baker led the Miners with four goals, Kellner with three, and Meyer and Haynes with one each. Ashley Peabody was in goal with 13 saves.
Erickson added, “The girls decide as a team what is going to happen when they step on the field, and last night it was obvious that they had decided they were going to win. They played beautifully, although it wasn’t their normal run of play; They thought quickly and moved the ball creatively to throw off PC’s amazing transitions. Coach Caffee and I are so excited for these girls and can’t wait to continue to play for our chance in play-offs. It was a great game!”
