Griffin Women Sweep Two Games on Saturday

SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women’s lacrosse team claimed wins over Utah State, 16-2, and Colorado State, 16-2, on Saturday afternoon at Dumke Field. Westminster improves to 7-2 on the season with the two victories.
In the opener against Utah State (3-2), the Griffins scored the first six goals of the contest and they ended the half with a 12-1 advantage.  Five players scored multiple goals in the game with Maggie HerrNeckar leading the way with four. Kira Heiden and Maddie Haynes scored three goals apiece. HerrNeckar and Haynes also recorded two assists in the win.
 
Westminster had a 42-11 edge in shot attempts and they put 30 of those shots on goal. The Griffins won 13 draw controls and picked up 29 ground balls while forcing the Aggies into 22 turnovers. Makenzie Hekking made eight saves in goal to earn the win.
 
The second game of the day saw Westminster defeat Colorado State (4-10) for the first time in school history. The Griffins had a 31-6 edge in shots while getting 28 shots on goal. They claimed 11 draw controls and held the Rams to just 4-of-20 in clearing attempts.
 
Haynes scored five goals in the game with one assists for six points. Katie Adams added six points with three goals and three assists and HerrNeckar scored three goals. Heiden tallied two goals and two assists. Hekking warned her second win of the day in cage with two saves.
 
Westminster is back in action on Friday when they play at Adams State at 3 p.m. (MT).
