SALT LAKE CITY – The second-ranked Westminster College men’s lacrosse team is off to Grand Junction, Colo. this weekend for the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference Tournament. Westminster begins its title defense in Friday’s semi-finals against the winner of the quarterfinal game between Northern Colorado and Western State (Colo.).
Friday’s game will begin at 10 a.m. from Walker Field on the campus of Colorado Mesa University. If the Griffins advance, the championship game will be played at 3 p.m. on Saturday. The championship game will be streamed live with a link available in the calendar section of WestminsterGriffins.com.
The Griffins are the two-time defending champions of the tournament and they have won the title four times in the six years they have played in the event. Westminster earned a bye into the semi-finals by virtue of winning the team’s seventh straight RMLC division championship.
Westminster went 12-5 during the regular season and finished 2-0 in division games. They enter the weekend have won six of the last seven games they have played. The Griffins only loss to a MCLA division II team this season was on Feb. 16 when they lost to No. 1 Saint Thomas (Minn.), 11-10.
Collin Madsen leads the Griffins with 64 points this season through the end of the regular season. Madsen has scored 41 goals with 23 assists. He also has won 65-of-100 faceoffs with 64 ground balls and 63 shots on goal. Kyle Postler has recorded 63 points and he leads the team with 35 assists. Jake Arthur leads all Griffins with 42 goals scored and he has taken a team-best 101 shots.
Erik Gronseth has posted a 7-1 record this season with a .616 save percentage. The freshman has made a team-best 85 saves while allowing 53 goals with a 6.71 goals-against-average. Chris Burckle has four wins with a .519 save percentage. He has made 69 stops an allowed 64 goals for a 10.30 goals-against-average.
