SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women’s lacrosse team fell to Fort Lewis College, 12-8, in the team’s first-ever home Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game on Thursday evening at Dumke Field.
Westminster (1-4, 1-2 RMAC) took a 4-3 lead at the 9:46 mark of the first half on a goal from Kira Heiden. Fort Lewis (5-3, 2-1) would then score the game’s next five goals to open an 8-4 advantage with23:19 to play in the second half.
The Griffins would close to 8-7 after a pair of goals from Katie Adams and another by Heiden. After the Skyhawks scored, Abby Sebastian got the Griffins back within 10-8 with 11:18 remaining. Fort Lewis would control much of the possession the rest of the game and scored twice in the final minute to secure the road victory.
Turnovers hurt the Griffins as they committed 33 in the game, including 21 in the first half. They also went just 10 of 23 in clearing attempts. Westminster took 18 shots in the game with 15 of them on cage. Fort Lewis had 25 shots (17 on goal) and they committed 27 turnovers.
Adams and Heiden led the Griffins with three goals apiece. Adams added an assists for a four-point game and she took a team-best six shots. Morgan Bakarich added one goal and one assist.
Heiden claimed five draw controls while Adams had four caused turnovers. Taylor Hekking took the loss in goal with five saves.
Sara McMahon scored three goals to lead the Skyhawks. Ellie Carpenter and Marissa DiCecco had two goals apiece. Alyssa Spencer earned the win in goal with seven stops.
Westminster will complete its three-game home stand on Saturday when they host Adams State. The action from Dumke Field will begin at 1 p.m. with tickets available at WestminsterGriffins.com/tickets.
