OREM, Utah – The Westminster men’s lacrosse team moved to No. 7 in the Under Armour MCLA Coaches’ Poll on Tuesday and celebrated with a 20-7 win over Utah Valley at the UVU Intramural Field on Tuesday night.
Westminster completes an undefeated 5-0 Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference season to win their first D-I conference crown in just their second year at the level. The win moves the Griffins to 9-3 overall on the season.
Troy Vance tallied a career-high eight points in the win with three goals and five assists. He hit the team’s season-high for points on five shots with one ground ball. Thomas Sarjeant and Kyle Postler had six points apiece as they each had three goals and three assists.
Westminster dominated possession for much of the evening by winning 22-of-30 faceoffs. They took 61 shots in the game with 37 on goal. Utah Valley (4-9, 1-4 RMLC) took 29 shots (18 on goal) and the Wolverines committed 20 turnovers. Westminster had a 41-21 edge in ground balls and were 22-of-25 in clearing attempts.
Ryan Coffelt won nine of his 10 faceoff attempts and Jake Berard was 12-of-16. They both had seven ground balls. Spencer Huso tied a school-record with four caused turnovers.
Erik Gronseth earned the win on cage for the Griffins with five saves in 37 minutes. Conner McFarlane made two stops in nine minutes and Josh Nett closed the game with four saves in 14 minutes.
UVU got two goals and one assist from Shane Weigman and Fred Davis added two goals. Shawn Rowley suffered the loss in cage with 17 saves.
Westminster will conclude the regular season on Friday when they travel to Grand Junction, Colo. for a game with NCAA D-II foe, Colorado Mesa.
