COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference released the Men’s Lacrosse Coaches Poll and Awards on Thursday. The coaches picked Westminster to place third in the five-team conference and Josh Holland and Thomas Sarjeant were named to the Preseason All-RMAC Team.
Westminster received 10 points in the poll of the league’s coaches to claim the No. 3 position. The Griffins begin their first year as a member of the RMAC this season and it’s the first year the RMAC has sponsored men’s lacrosse as a championship sport.
Holland, a senior from Riverton, Utah, was chosen to the preseason all-conference team at midfield while Sarjeant, a sophomore from Carlsbad, Calif., made the team at attack. The duo becomes the first Griffin men’s lacrosse players to be honored by the conference.
Westminster joins the RMAC after going 9-6 in the MCLA last season. The Griffins were 5-0 in RMLC games and advanced to the MCLA National Championships.
Holland scored a team-best 39 goals last season while adding 11 assists for 50 points. He won the Godekeraw Player of the Year Award in the MCLA last season. Sarjeant finished his freshman campaign with a team-best 29 assists and 57 points.
Colorado Mesa was tabbed the preseason favorite in the inaugural RMAC season after coming away with 16 total points, including four first-place nods. Last season, the Mavericks finished 10-3 overall, with a perfect 6-0 mark in the Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (WILA).
Teams received four points for a first-place vote, three points for a second-place vote, continuing in descending order. Coaches could not vote for their own team.
Colorado Mesa’s David Solomon was named Preseason Player of the Year. Rockhurst’s Ian Meister and Adams State’s Seth Stowell claimed Preseason Co-Midfielders of the Year. Rockhurst’s Michael Boehm was tabbed Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. Colorado Mesa’s Zach Weaver was named Preseason Goalie of the Year.
The major awards, plus the Preseason All-RMAC squad was selected by the league’s coaches. They could not vote for their own players.
Westminster will begin the 2016 season on February 13 at Notre Dame de Namur. The home opener is slated for February 27 against Utah Valley. Season and individual game tickets for the men’s lacrosse season will go on sale on February 8 at WestminsterGriffins.com/tickets.
