The Juan Diego Soaring Eagle beat the Alta Hawks on Saturday night by the score of 7-6 in a rematch of the 2012 Boys D-I Championship which Juan Diego won 9-8.
Alta scored first when attackmen Kyle Baldassari found the back of the cage on a nice shot to give the Hawks an early lead. Juan Diego answered when attackmen Tommy Maddox tied the game on a slow break after the Soaring Eagle offense strung together quick passes leaving Maddox wide open on the crease for the one-on-one bounce shot goal. Juan Diego Midfielder Nick Grogg scored next when he picked up the ball on the side of the field and took it towards the goal. The Alta defense failed to slide and Grogg slotted the bounce shot in for the goal, giving Juan Diego the lead. Three minutes later, Alta Goalie Grant Archer cleared the ball to midfielder Hunter Hansen who took it to the goal untouched and scored, tying the game at 2 to end the first quarter.
Juan Diego Attackmen Matthew Graney scored at the 5:29 mark in the second quarter when Grogg caught the Alta defense ball watching, feeding to Graney on the crease for a wide open goal. Juan Diego scored two minutes later when Graney found midfielder Austin Roberts wide open on the crease who slotted it home, making the score 4-2 for the Soaring Eagle which would last until halftime.
Both teams fought hard in the third quarter, getting great looks on goal but just missing wide or having them saved by great goalie play. With around 4 minutes left in the quarter, Archer was able to get the backup of a shot which led to a successful Alta clear. The Hawks in-bounded the ball to Baldassari who found attackmen Harrison Waddoups on the backside who was able to rip a top left shot into the net for the goal. A minute later, off a failed clear by Juan Diego, in similar fashion to their third goal, Alta scored again on a cross-field pass to the backside. This time, Baldassari found attackmen Cole Parkinson who slotted it top left for the goal, tying the game at 4. Just as Alta was gaining steam, Juan Diego, with time expiring, scored when Graney found Grogg in the center of the field who caught and shot it low and away, hitting the inside of the net with one second remaining in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter scoring began when Juan Diego cleared the ball that found Luke Graney storming down the middle of the field, drawing the slide and finding Maddox on the crease for the goal, making the score 6-4 for Juan Diego. Two minutes later, Juan Diego Midfielder Alex Day caught the ball at the top of the box, dodged past one defender, drew the slide of another, spun and dodged another, drew a penalty then bounced it low for the goal. Alta wasn’t finished and was determined to come back. With 8 minutes remaining, Archer again won the backup off a shot and Alta was able to clear. The ball found it’s way to attackmen Tanner Brown who had a huge rip from outside for the goal, sending the Alta bench into hysterics. Three minutes later, on a broken play, Juan Diego Goalie Riley Rose came out of the cage to collect a ground ball on the wing which he did. Rose moved the ball up-field but it was intercepted by midfielder Josh McNall who immediately looked up to find Waddoups wide open in front the crease. Waddoups caught the ball, took two steps backwards and shot it into the open goal to make the score 7-6 for Juan Diego.
Alta continued to fight hard but were unable to get shots on goal. With time expiring, Baldassari was at goal-line-extended, drove to the cage, drawing four Juan Diego defenders who sandwiched Baldassari who was unable to score, but did draw a penalty, keeping the hopes alive for the Hawks. With 3 seconds remaining, Alta Midfielder Chase Oviatt got the ball off the restart, drove toward the top of the field and took a shot but it was deflected as time expired, giving Juan Diego the 7-6 victory.
“Danny Maxwell played great for us tonight,” said Juan Diego Head Coach Pat Lambert. “Riley Rose played great in goal as well. Our attackmen are playing really well and had great games today.”
Rose had 11 saves for Juan Diego who were led on the offensive side by Grogg who had 2 goals and an assist followed by Matthew Graney who had a goal and 2 assists. Alta won 9 of 16 face-offs and were led by Baldassari who had a goal and 3 assists. Archer had 15 saves for the Hawks.
Juan Diego will travel down State Street to take on Jordan on Tuesday while Alta will play rival Brighton on Tuesday at Alta.
