Juan Diego Edges Corner Canyon for Spot in Championship

2016-JuanDiego-CornerCanyon-Semifinals-05You couldn’t have asked for a better game between the #2 seed Juan Diego Soaring Eagles and the #3 seed Corner Canyon Chargers. Both teams played all-out lacrosse, and it was a tight contest throughout. However, Juan Diego got the advantage early and wouldn’t relent. Though the game was tied a number of times, Corner Canyon just never seemed to be able to find the extra edge to put themselves over the hump, playing catch-up multiple times. The Chargers made a last ditch effort, down 1 with under two minutes to go, to line their goalie up as an attackman to have an extra defender to try and steal the ball from Juan Diego. The play was ineffective, however, and Juan Diego was able to score. Multiple last-minute shots couldn’t connect for Corner Canyon, and Juan Diego pulled out the tightly contested win, 10-8.
Tristan Courtney came out strong and had two quick, impressive goals to start out the game. Davis Zwicky had 5 goals for Corner Canyon, 3 in the first half, to keep Corner Canyon neck-and-neck with Juan Diego throughout a game that was tied up many times. Some crafty feeds from Max Franckowiak in the second half for Corner Canyon and some Great saves by Goalie Britton Inkley weren’t enough to stop Juan Diego and Tristan Courtney, Chance Hower, and D-Pole Ryan Baker going coast to coast for goals in the second half.
Juan Diego coach John Holmes on the game: “We knew it would be tough going in, and it was a dog fight! Both teams played fantastic, a few ties throughout and there towards the end, but we made it work.” On focus going into championship: “We’ll focus on our intensity. We came out a little flat today and we’ll fix that.”
Juan Diego will play preseason-favorite Brighton in the Class-A championship game on Saturday at Brighton High School at 7:00 pm.
