Juan Diego Routs East, Stevenson Shaves Beard

Pete Stevenson & Pat Lambert

In one of the most anticipated games of the young high school lacrosse season, the Juan Diego Soaring Eagle beat the East Leopards 18-3 on Monday night, thus sealing the fate of the beard of East Head Coach Pete Stevenson. The game had many titles; ‘Fear the Beard’, ‘The Bet’ and ‘Battle of the Beards’.
The BetFor those unfamiliar with the stakes of the game, last January, at the US Lacrosse Convention in Philadelphia, Stevenson and Juan Diego Head Coach Pat Lambert made a bet that whoever lost this game would have to shave their beard. Juan Diego High School had put signs throughout their corridors to help promote the game. Some students even wore fake beards to help raise awareness.
On the field, Juan Diego opened their season where they left off, running fluid offensive sets and lock-down defense. Senior Attackmen Tommy Maddox scored first for the Soaring Eagle followed by a hat-trick by midfielder Ryan Green to give Juan Diego a 4-0 lead with 4 minutes to play in the first quarter. East Midfielder Isaac ‘Birdman’ Robbins put East on the board with one of his signature shots. Juan Diego then scored 3 goals in a minute to take a 7-1 lead after the first quarter.
Juan Diego scored the next 7 goals before Robbins scored again from the opposite side of the field. A Soaring Eagle goal with 16 seconds left gave Juan Diego a 15-2 lead at halftime. East Attackmen Nelson Lloyd gave East their third and final goal at the 6:50 mark in the third quarter. The Juan Diego second and third lines saw time in the second half and were able to score three more goals for the win.
“We’ve got a confident group of guys,” said Lambert. “It’s an advantage right now for us. They communicate really well and play well together.”
East Goalie Kort Johnson finished the night with 8 saves. The Juan Diego goalie trio had 4 saves. Juan Diego won 15 of 25 face-offs.
Juan Diego will host Spanish Fork on Thursday. East will head to Bountiful on Friday to take on the Braves.
True to his word, Stevenson shaved his beard later that night.
