Juan Diego Soars Away With 15-5 Win Over Lone Peak

Juan Diego LacrosseIn a highly anticipated rematch of the 2013 ULA Boys D-I Championship game, the Juan Diego Soaring Eagle flew to a 15-5 win over Lone Peak on Friday night at Juan Diego.
Juan Diego opened the scoring at the 9:36 mark when Alec Meyer notched his first goal of the game which was followed by a goal by Mattias Schade to give Juan Diego a 2-0 lead early in the first quarter. Lone Peak scored next when Josh Stout found the back of the net to make the game 2-1. Fans and players alike could sense this was going to turn into a back-and-forth affair, but Juan Diego had different plans. The Soaring Eagle went on a four goal run to make the score 6-1 midway through the second quarter. Tanner Lloyd pulled a goal back for Lone Peak to make the score 6-2 for Juan Diego with 4:15 left in the half. As the half was ending, Juan Diego was having trouble penetrating the Lone Peak defense. Finally, as time was running out, Meyer let loose a cannon from downtown that stung the top right corner, giving Juan Diego a 7-2 lead at halftime.
The second half was more of the same with Juan Diego scoring four goals in the third quarter while allowing one goal. The fourth quarter saw Juan Diego score three more with Lone Peak grabbing two goals.
“I thought we did a nice job protecting the ball and moving it around,” said Juan Diego Head Coach John Holmes. “Both goalies did a pretty nice job for their first varsity games.”
Those goalies, Sophomore Sean Edwards and Freshman Brendan Roberts, looked like veterans in the cage, each registering 5 saves. Lone Peak goalie Sean Wetsel had 7 saves. Juan Diego won 17 of 24 faceoffs.
The Soaring Eagle will host Corner Canyon next Tuesday, March 11. Lone Peak will host American Fork, also on Tuesday.
