The Juan Diego Soaring Eagle used a strong second half to beat the Olympus Titans on Saturday at Olympus High School by the score of 15-7.
Both teams came out with high intensity, leading to aggressive ground ball efforts and several fast-breaks. Both offenses were able to get good possessions but off target shots and great goalie play kept the scoreboard blank until the 9:01 mark when Juan Diego Midfielder Nick Grogg scored. Four minutes later, Soaring Eagle Attackmen Luke Graney scored to give Juan Diego a small lead. Both teams continued to battle in the first quarter with neither team finding the back of the net.

Juan Diego (8-1) scored at the 10:05 mark in the second quarter on a fast-break goal to get a three goal lead and what appeared to be a rout. However, Olympus wouldn’t go away, scoring three straight goals in a 2 minute span to tie the score. Juan Diego scored at the 4:28 mark but Olympus won the ensuing face-off and scored 7 seconds later. The Olympus defense were caught looking ahead to halftime, letting Juan Diego score with 55 seconds and 5 seconds left, giving the Soaring Eagle a 6-4 lead at halftime.
Juan Diego scored six goals in the third quarter and only allowed one goal off a fast-break to take control of the game. Olympus would score twice in the fourth quarter to bring the score within six goals with 5 minutes remaining, but Juan Diego closed out the game for the win.
“I was pleased with the effort,” said Juan Diego Head Coach Patrick Lambert. “It was a tight game. Olympus came out battling. They’ve got a tough squad that is aggressive and it was a great battle.”
Graney had 3 goals and 4 assists to lead Juan Diego. Two of his assists went to his brother, Matthew Graney who had 3 goals. Olympus was led by Joshua Johnson who had 3 goals and 1 assist. In the cage, Olympus Goalie Ben Schettler had 11 saves while Juan Diego Goalie Erik Gronseth had 8 saves.
“Erik Gronseth is just tough,” said Lambert. “Every now and then they broke away and had wide open shots but he just stuffed them and takes the winds out of their sails. Our LSM Parker Carson played well too. He just runs so hard and really sparks players on both sides of the midfield stripe.”
Juan Diego will host Copper Hills on Tuesday in a Sandy Conference match-up. Olympus (3-5, 0-1) will travel to Judge to take on the Bulldogs in a Wednesday Doubleheader when Utah takes on Utah State in MCLA action following the Olympus v. Judge game.
