LaX RoX Tournament Coverage, Day One

The LaX RoX tournament opened this weekend in Saint George as a way for teams to dust-off their sticks in preparation for the upcoming high school season.

The action kicked off on a cold, but sunny day at the Sullivan Soccer Park in Saint George, Utah. Teams came from all over the state to compete against one another to get tuned-up for the regular season. Teams making the trip included:

The Timpview boys team played Saint George at 5:00 p.m. on Friday in what was a tightly contested game throughout. As soon as Saint George would score, Timpview would counter. It was a physical, back-and-forth game. The game was tied going into the final seconds. Timpview had the ball and was clearing, but lost it at the midline. A last second half-field shot for Saint George snatched the victory from the Thunderbirds.

As soon as the 5:00 p.m. games ended, a snowstorm hit that dumped snow on the fields. What was a 40 degree day quickly dropped below freezing as each team was doing their best to handle the icy conditions.

After the snowfall, Copper Hills took on the Olympus boys team in what was an exciting game. The Grizzlies came out fighting, taking a commanding 7-2 lead into the half, but the Titans came storming back, evening the score up to 8-8 to send it into overtime. In overtime, the Grizzlies were able to secure the victory to win it 9-8.

Next, the East boys lacrosse team took down the Westlake Thunder. The Leopards took a 8-1 halftime lead and never looked back. The Leopards looked sharp early, but the game became sloppy as there were numerous turnovers on both sides. East proved to be too much for the Thunder, capping off an impressive 15-1 victory over Westlake.

The final game the ULN staff caught was the Olympus girls versus Hurricane game, featuring the defending Utah state champs in Division B in the Olympus Titans. It was a back and forth affair, with multiple lead changes early. Eventually, the Titans were able to outpace Hurricane late in the game after a run by Hurricane pulled the Tigers within one goal in the final seconds. The final score was 10-9 in favor of Olympus.
