Matheny Leads Cavemen Past Timberwolves

American Fork fired on all cylinders Friday afternoon en route to a 13-4 victory over the Timpanogos Timberwolves. The Cavemen were led by Kimball Matheny who had 3 goals and 4 assists.
Matheny opened the scoring at the 7:51 mark in the first quarter then assisted Cory Ernst two minutes later to give American Fork a 2-0 lead. Marshall Card finished a behind-the-back goal that was answered by Timpanogos when Jack Griffith pushed from X, drew the slide and found Maxwell Roberts on the crease who easily converted the quick-stick goal.
The second quarter began with Timberwolves Thomas Miles executing a perfect step down shot to make the score 3-2 for American Fork. Just as the game began to get close, the Cavemen put the game out of reach with tough defense, great goalie play and a successful offensive scheme. Matheny started a 5 goal run that extended into the second half. Alton Taylor had two goals in the run while Card added another to his tally. Matheny finished the run with a coast-to-coast to begin the second half.
Timpanogos pulled two goals back including a nice wrap around goal by Griffith but that would be the last time the Timberwolves found twine. The American Fork defense once again clamped down and pitched a shutout the rest of the way. The offense for American Fork scored 5 more goals to secure the win.
“We’ve had some rough losses at home,” said American Fork Head Coach Jesse Card. “We had great focus today which led us to a great win which got the monkey off our back. It was an all-around team effort. We had our attack, midfield and defense play really well.”
American Fork improved to 6-3 on the season with losses to Sky View, Corner Canyon and Olympus. The Cavemen will take to the road for a three game stretch at Waterford (1-2), Highland (1-2) and Wasatch (2-2). Timpanogos falls to 3-4 but will host its next six games at home.
