MCLA: No. 19 Griffins Host No. 6 Colorado, No. 13 Colorado State

SALT LAKE CITY – The No. 19 Westminster men’s lacrosse team begins a three-game home stand this week with a pair of Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference game against ranked opponents. Westminster welcomes No. 6 Colorado to Dumke Field on Thursday at 4 p.m. (MT). On Sunday, No. 13 Colorado State comes to town for a game that starts at noon. Tickets for both games are now available at WestminsterGriffins.com/tickets.
Both games this week will be broadcast live on Griffins TV. Lance Barton will handle the play-by-play of both games. Griffins TV is available online and on Roku players and mobile devices by downloading the Livestream app. There will also be live stats available for both of the games. Westminster enters the week at 5-3 on the season and 1-0 in RMLC action. They are coming off wins at Utah (25-3) and Colorado State-Pueblo (24-2) last week. The Griffins are 0-1 at home this season after dropping a 12-11 decision to Minnesota Duluth in overtime on March 16.
The Griffins are averaging 14.25 goals per game on the season and they have scored in double figures in all but one game so far. They are taking 44.8 shots per outing with 58.9 percent of those attempts on goal while recording 68 assists and assisting on 59.6 percent of their goals scored. Westminster is 10-of-23 (43.5 percent) in man-up opportunities and they commit 16.8 turnovers per game. They also have clear percentage at 85.5 percent and they are winning 54.7 percent of faceoffs.
 
Griffin opponents are scoring 7.75 goals per game while they attempt 28.8 shots per game. Westminster has held five opponents to eight goals or less. The opposition puts 57 percent of their shots on goal and they have tallied 25 assists for a 40.3 assist percentage. The eight opponents have gone 5-of-20 (25 percent) in man-up opportunities with a 68.6 clearing percentage. The Griffins force with 19.1 turnovers per game with 64 caused turnovers.
 
Kyle Postler and Josh Holland are tied for the team lead with 19 goals apiece. Thomas Sarjeant leads all Griffins with 19 assists while scoring 17 goals for a team-best 36 points. Elias Fairman has added 18 goals and Postler has 12 assists. Ryan Coffelt has picked up 45 ground balls with 57 faceoff wins. Jake Berard wins 57.5 percent of his faceoff attempts and Spencer Huso leads the way with seven caused turnovers.
 
Colorado comes to SLC at 9-3 overall this season and 1-0 in the RMLC. The Buffaloes opened the year with eight-straight wins before suffering a three-game losing skid. They defeated Davenport, 14-10, in their last game on March 28. As a team, Colorado is scoring 13.33 goals per game while giving up 8.33 per contest. John Clayton and Colin MacIlvennie lead the team with 22 goals apiece while Jace Gan has scored 21 times. Clayton has a team-best 13 assists. Jensen Makarov has made 146 saves in cage with a .586 save percentage.
 
Colorado State begins the week at 7-5 on the year and 1-0 in the RMLC. The Rams have dropped five of their last seven outings, including an 8-7 loss to Davenport on March 29. They are scoring 11.92 goals per game while allowing 7.42 on the year. Ashton Monheiser leads the team with 25 goals and nine assists. David Salamie has posted a .564 save percentage with 97 saves.
 
Westminster is winless in three meetings with Colorado all-time. Thursday will be the first time the teams have played at Dumke Field. Colorado beat the Griffins twice last season, including a 15-8 win at the RMLC Tournament. The Griffins are 0-2 all-time against Colorado State and they will meet at Dumke Field for the first time on Sunday. CSU won last year’s game, 12-6, in Fort Collins, Colo.
