Week 2 of the MCLA brought some good things and some bad things for the Utah MCLA teams so let’s break it down.
On Thursday, No. 1 BYU (5-1) got the ball rolling with a comfortable 16-5 win over San Diego State. On Saturday, in front of a live audience, the Cougars came back from being down 5 goals in the second half to take the win. Drew Shumway scored an amazing low-to-high shot with 1 second remaining in regulation to take the game into overtime. In the second overtime, Patrick Matheson used his huge frame to over power his defender and took it to the cage for the game winner. On Monday, the Cougars fell to No. 7 Cal Poly in another nail biter, losing 10-9.
No. 17 Utah (2-2) faced a tough opponent in Cal, losing 9-4 but beat Washington 11-6. The Utes hung tight with No. 4 Chapman but ultimately fell, 9-6 on Monday.
In Division II, No. 6 Westminster proved they are a top team by beating No. 17 Sam Houston State 15-9, No. 10 Western Oregon 17-8 and UC Santa Cruz 25-4. Transfers Collin Madsen and Matt Hearn had big games for the Griffins. No. 16 UVU was also in action falling to Western Washington and Cal State Fullerton by a combined score of 35-9.
The only MCLA game in Utah this week is on Friday when the Utes host Boise State.
