In the first game of the high school championships at Skyline High School, the Mountain Crest Mustangs won the Boys Class C state finals in overtime over the Ridgeline Riverhawks.
Ridgeline took an early two-goal lead in the first quarter with goals by Kolby Sorenson and Harrison Hoth. Mountain Crest wouldn’t go away as they went on a four-goal run to take the lead at half, 4-2.
Ridgeline would take the lead once more in the second half as they went up 7-6, but that would be their last lead of the game.
Mountain Crest scored the final two goals, one in regulation to tie the game and the final goal in overtime to seal the victory.
Jace Wilkinson scored the game winner in overtime for Mountain Crest. Mustangs head coach Ron Durham was ecstatic for his player.
“He’s been stopped a lot, mainly our semifinal game Thursday. Today, he’s come up big. He’s worked on being right there and taking good shots. I can’t say enough about him,” said Durham.
Heading into overtime, Durham let his players take control.
“We pulled out and let the captains take control of it. We’ve been coaching them and they knew what to do. We just said, we’ve got to attack the crease,” Durham said.
Durham expressed what this game meant to the Mustangs. Two years ago we didn’t have a JV. We told the guys they are setting the standard and the pace,” said Durham.
