No. 1 Skyline Holds Off No. 4 Beetdiggers For Key Win

2013-Skyline-Olympus-Girls-Lacrosse-18The No. 1 Skyline Eagles and the No. 4 Jordan Beetdiggers squared off in the first quarterfinal game of a doubleheader at Big Cottonwood Park in Salt Lake City on Friday. The Eagles held off the Beetdiggers, winning 13-10.
The upset minded ‘Diggers were able to get on the board first with a goal by Kate Lesuer. Shortly after, Skylines Zoe Aldous was able to respond on a free position shot. On Skylines very next possession, Aldous was able to give the Eagles the go ahead lead after she capitalized on another free position. Skylines Annie Glenn got into the mix with a nice cut and goal to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead. Jordan’s Mikayla Parker was not going to let the Lady ‘Diggers go down quietly and was able to roll the crease and get a goal to bring them within one. However, on the ensuing draw Skyline was able to capitalize on another free position shot. Jordan was able to get a nice cut to the goal and shot by Whitney Sieverts to bring the Diggers back to within one. Skyline’s Miklain Huntsman would answer right back with a goal of her own to get the Eagles back up by 2.
The defenses on both ends stepped up and forced the ball to move back and forth until Skyline was able to break the silence with a goal by Julia Thomas to bring the score to 6-3. Just second after, Skyline added another one to bring the half time score to 7-3 in favor of Skyline.
The second half started similar as Jordan was able to score first with Skyline answering right back. Jordan was able to capitalize on a free position to close the gap to three. The two team swapped goals quickly to bring the score to 9-6. The Lady ‘Diggers were able to settle the ball on their offensive end and work it to find an opening for Parker who added another to close the gap to two.
It was at this time that the game was delayed due to lightning.
“Our team was worried about the weather and what would happen if they rescheduled,” said Skyline Assistant Coach Melissa Nash. After the ten minute delay, Skylines Claire Andrues was able to capitalize on a free position to swing the momentum back in favor of the Eagles. The two teams once again swapped goals to bring the score to 11-8. The pesky Beetdiggers would not go away as they swapped goals with Skyline once more to bring the score 12-9. The Eagles started to settle into their stall offense and the Lady ‘Diggers increased their defensive pressure. Skyline’s stall offense scored again but was answered by a goal from Katie Bangerter of Jordan. This would prove to be the last goal of the game, giving Skyline the 13-10 win.
The second game of the doubleheader made it to halftime until it was ultimately postponed due to lightning. Riverton was up 7-2 over Olympus. The second half will be played either today or Monday. The winner of this game will face Skyline on Tuesday at 5:30pm at Park City High School.
