Park City Begins Title Defense on Wednesday

The defending Boys state champions, Park City, will begin its 2019 season on Wednesday against the Herriman Mustangs. The Miners will spend the month of March on the road with seven straight road games lined up.

Brian Bilzi takes charge as he becomes the next Park City head coach after leading the defense last year under James Meyers who stepped down at the end of last season. Bilzi hails from Huntington, New York and played collegiately for Manhattan.

“The message has been that last year means nothing heading into this season,” said Bilzi. “It’s a great memory, and the returning players know how hard they had to work to take it. We have to start that process entirely over again to get back to where we were at the end of last season.”

Park City returns several key components from last years team including newly named captains Marc Colaizzi, Andrew Pederson, and Dylan Bauer. On the offensive side of the ball, Ketch Schuler, Toby Burke, and Connor Hales will look to find the back of the net for the Miners.

“They’ve  been around the program a long time and we love what they bring as players and  leaders,” said Bilzi. “It will be fun to watch how they leave their mark on the program before they graduate.”

Defensively, the Miners are in great shape with Luke McCall, Griff Riggs, Colazzi and Teddy Elbert at close defense leaving Pederson at LSM and Brady Bauman at the short-stick defense midfield position.

“It’s a deep group who play extremely well together,” said Bilzi. “We have a group of defenders who make me look like a much better coach than I actually am.”

The Miners hope to become one of the many teams who have repeated as champions to further cement their legacy on the field.

“We’re going to have to re-invent ourselves to win it again,” said Bilzi. “We lost two of the better players the program’s ever seen in Beau Pederson and Connor French to graduation. For us to repeat we need some of the boys  to take a step forward in their new larger roles.”
