The Park City Miners beat the Judge Bulldogs by the final score of 14-13 on Wednesday night in Salt Lake City to claim the No. 4 seed heading into the playoffs next week. With the loss, Judge finished as the No. 5 seed.
The Miners scored first when Chad Merrick had a man-up low-to-low goal to give Park City the early advantage. A minute later, Judge Midfielder Gabe Rechsteiner equalized on a shot on the run as he was cutting from the middle of the field towards the wing. Judge was reluctant to give Park City the ball and controlled the possession for most of the first quarter. Two more Judge man-up goals gave them a 3-1 lead with 4:17 left in the quarter. Park City was final able to settle the ball on offense which paid huge dividends for the Miners. With 1:26 left, Merrick scored with a quick-stick on the crease. A minute later, Merrick again scored on the crease to tie the game at 3. On the ensuing face-off, Park City FOS Jackson Burton won the ball, took it down the field and found Merrick who dodge from GLE and scored to give Park City a 4-3 lead after the first quarter.
Park City went on a 3 goal run to start the second quarter. Neither team score for the next 7 minutes until Rechsteiner found the back of the net at the 2:38 mark. Park City answered with 2 goals of their own to take a commanding 9-4 lead with 1:25 left in the first half. A Park City penalty late in the half allowed Judge to get a goal back before the break when Sean Sloan ripped a low shot for the goal, making the score 9-5 at the break.

The third quarter was filled with great lacrosse from both squads who were looking to find an edge. The quarter was pretty even with Judge scoring 4 goals to Park City’s 3 goals, making the score 12-9 for the Miners heading into the fourth quarter.
Both teams traded goals to start the quarter. Rechsteiner and Grant Pierce scored for Judge to bring them within one goal midway through the fourth quarter. Both teams knew that each remaining possession would be critical. With 2:53 left, Park City took a 2 goal lead when Merrick scored on a man-up play. Pierce answered right back wit 2:02 left in the game when he cut from the wing, caught the pass and scored to make the score 14-13 for Park City. With 25 seconds left, Park City Defenseman Chase Flinders stole the ball and ran into his offensive end. Judge committed a penalty on the play which led to Park City running time of the clock for the key win.
“Judge has been beating us for years and years,” said Park City Head Coach Andy Langendorf. “It’s just nice to come down and get the win against a quality opponent.”
Merrick finished with 6 goals for Park City. Rechsteiner had 5 goals of his own to lead the Bulldogs. Sheridan Buchholz had 7 saves in cage for the Miners while Judge Goalie Dexter Holmquist managed to get one save in the loss. Park City won 17 of 29 face-offs.
Park City will take on Waterford on Saturday before heading into the playoffs to face Spanish Fork. Judge finished their season with a 7-6 record and will take on Pleasant Grove in the first round of the playoffs.
