Park City Edges Corner Canyon

Park City

In a mid-season, No. 1 v. No. 2 matchup, the No. 2 Park City Miners captured a 7-6 win over the No. 1 Corner Canyon Chargers on Wednesday night in Park City. The game turned out to be as close on the field as the stats showed. Very little separated these two squads coming into the game and the play on the field lived up to the hype.
Corner Canyon Attackman Matt Graney started the score on a slow break. Park City returned the favor a minute later when Tucker Mirams found Cole Flinders who buried the ball in the back of the net. There was a flag after the play, so the Miners got the ball automatically which led to Flinders getting the ball on the wing and finding Kolton Atkinson cutting across the middle of the field. Atkinson finished well to give Park City the 2-1 lead. Davis Zwicky tied the game for the Chargers when he came onto the field, got the pass from up top, dodged inside and split two Park City defenders, shot and scored, tying the game at 2.
Corner Canyon started the second quarter with 3 straight shots hitting the pipe. The Miners capitalized on the missed Chargers opportunities when Chase Christensen scored on an alley rip. Just 48 second later, Zack Franckowiak noticed Zwicky was unmarked. Zwicky caught the pass and stepped down, ripping a high to low shot into the back of the net to equalize at 3. The Chargers regained the lead when Graney scored on a manup opportunity. The penalty was non-releasable, but being short-handed didn’t stop JJ Pickard from taking the ball the distance. He was determined and his hard work paid off as he tied the game at 4.

To kick off the scoring in the second half, Corner Canyon Goalie Quinton Mathie made an excellent save, cleared to Garrett Bullett who went to the hole uncovered and shot. The shot was blocked but teammate Max Asay scooped up the rebound and scored. The Miners then used three man-up opportunities in the middle of the quarter to tie the game and gain a two goal lead. It was the first time either team led by more then one goal. The fourth quarter was a defensive battle. Park City goalie Ian Sime was a brick wall, stopping several shots. The Corner Canyon defense was equally up to the challenge with Bullett & Crew causing several turnovers.
As the game was winding down, Corner Canyon attackman Cole Parkinson collected a loose ball off a failed clear, looked up and found Asay who faked then dunked the ball in the back of the net to make the score 7-6 for Park City. Franckowiak won the ensuing face-off, just one of four for the Chargers on the night, and head coach Mark Davis called a timeout. The Chargers came out of the break, worked the ball around and found Zwicky at the top of the box. Zwicky laid into his shot and hit pipe. Park City cleared and ran out the clock and secured the win.
“We were nervous and really excited,” said Flinders. “We’ve had this game on our mind since Vegas. We’ve been watching a lot of film and were excited to play. We moved the ball really well. It was just really good team offense for us tonight.”
“We had to work hard in practice and we were telling them that it was going to be tight no matter what, even if we executed it was going to be a close game and that’s what it turned out to be,” said Park City head coach Andy Langendorf. “We told them it would be fun and it was a lot of fun.”
Sime had 11 saves for the Miners. Mathie finished with 7 saves. Park City FOS Jackson Burton won 11 of 15 face-offs.
“Jackson Burton is still a huge a factor for us,” said Langendorf. “Everybody contributes on our squad but Jackson has a very difficult job.”
Park City (10-0) takes on Davis next Wednesday. Corner Canyon (9-1) will head to Oregon next week to take on West Linn, Lakeridge and Lincoln.
