The Pleasant Grove Vikings came out on top in a classic battle with the Copper Hills Grizzlies on Monday night at Olympus High School in the ULA Girls D-II Semifinals. The Vikings won 7-5 on the back of Alese Norton who had 4 goals for the Vikings.
Pleasant Grove struck first when Addison McArthur found space in the defense and found the back of the net. The Vikings extended their lead on a quick fast break goal by Megan Lovell. At this point it felt like Pleasant Grove would cruise to victory, but the Grizzlies held tough and scored a goal of their own by Mercedes Kent. Norton was able to get another goal before Copper Hill scored two straight to tie the game at 3 with 2:27 left in the first half. Copper Hills earned their first lead with 10 seconds left when Kent found the back of the net again, giving Copper Hills a 4-3 lead at the break.

Pleasant Grove came out of the break and tied the game when Hannah Snow cut down the middle and quick-sticked a pass from Kaci Hamilton to tie the game at 4. The Vikings went on a three goal run starting at the 11:20 mark to give them a 7-4 lead. The Pleasant Grove defense and ride was relentless which helped keep Copper Hills from gaining valuable possessions. The Grizzlies did get a free position goal at the 1:45 mark but they were unable to capitalize on another late possession which let the Vikings take the ball to their own end and run out the clock.
“I liked the overall hustle and intensity of these girls,” said Pleasant Grove Co-Head Coach Blake Norton. “That second half was some of the best ball movement we’ve seen all year from our team.”
The Vikings will play Lehi on Saturday at 10am in the 2014 ULA Girls D-II Championship game at Park City High School.
