Pleasant Grove Too Much for Miners

The Pleasant Grove Vikings used strong offensive play to beat the Bingham Miners 15-6 on Saturday at Pleasant Grove High School. In the end, the lethal attack of the Vikings proved to be too much for the Miners.
The Vikings scored first on a goal by attackmen Spencer Merrifield. The next goal came when Pleasant Grove Midfielder Chad Madsen caught the outlet pass at midfield and took it the distance, running by defenders and scoring a goal. Bingham Goalie Scott Bronson was injured on the play which led to Junior Jake Young stepping up. Typically a goalie change is a bad sign but Young was stellar, making several great saves and playing like a veteran.
Viking Attackmen Michael Perry scored next after taking his man behind the cage and driving up the right side of the crease, wrapping around and shooting low for the goal. Bingham answered back with a goal by Aaron Crane making the score 3-1. Perry found the back of the net again for Pleasant Grove before the Vikings committed two penalties, making it easy for Bingham Sophomore Attackmen Matt Anderson to score. Perry earned his hat-trick with 19 seconds left in the first quarter, giving the Vikings a 5-2 lead.

The second quarter only saw two goalies, one by Merrifield and one by Madsen. Bingham played good defense but was unable to get their offense to click.
Pleasant Grove outscored the Miners 5-1 in the third quarter. The lone Bingham goal was on a man-up opportunity when Crane ripped a shot over his defender and past the goalies shoulder.
Bingham would open the scoring in the fourth quarter on a man-up play but at that point it was too little, too late. The Pleasant Grove offense continued to operate like a well oiled machine.
“The one thing we did well today is that we moved the ball on attack,” said Pleasant Grove Head Coach Brae Burbidge. “I feel our d-poles got a little spread out but we were able to hold them to a low number so that’s a good thing.”
The Vikings were led by Perry who had 5 goals and 3 assists. Pleasant Grove Goalie Kassin Jackson had 11 saves on the day.
“Out goalie, Kassin Jackson did phenomenal today,” said Burbidge.
Pleasant Grove will take on Olympus on Wednesday at Olympus High School in Holladay. Bingham will host Bountiful on Tuesday.
