Ravens get Revenge on Bingham, Head to Class-B Championship

The second boy’s Class-B semifinal on Tuesday was a rematch of Waterford’s final game of the regular season, where Bingham won in overtime 10-9. It had the makeup to turn into a Class-B playoff slugfest to decide who would play in the final. The game did not disappoint: Late in the fourth, Bingham’s Josh Degn was then able to steal a pass from Waterford’s Tyler Cramer during a clear, and have a one-on-one where he was able to slip a shot down low to make it 8-7 in favor of the Ravens. Multiple long possessions by both teams were shut down by great saves by both Bingham’s Connor Fairholm and Waterford’s Tyler Cramer and kept everyone on edge to who would grab the advantage. Waterford’s Henry Christiansen was found open on crease and while getting hit in the back was able to slip in a shot past the goalie’s head. Brock Mckinney was then able to score again in transition for Bingham to get within 1 goal. Multiple possessions and shots by Bingham at the end, to try and tie it up, were countered with some great defensive efforts and saves by Waterford. There was one last ditch effort by Bingham goalie Jeremy Croall, who ran the clear himself, and, not finding anyone open, took a shot against Cramer, but was unable to get it to go. Waterford ended with the win 9-8.
IMG_0037_2Waterford coach Dave Brattin on being able to pull out the win: “Our guys fought hard, and continued to give us chances even when we had slips in our game plan.” On match-up with Bonneville in the championship: “We lost to AF, Bingham, and Bonneville in overtime during the regular season. We have beaten AF, and Bingham in the playoffs now, so hopefully we make that 3 for 3 on Saturday.” On Facing a Kobe on a Laker’s team in a finals game: “Well we have a guy who’s birthday in on Saturday, so hopefully that’ll even that out.”
Waterford got off to a hot start and Nick Winters got things going with a shot after sprinting down towards the right side and burying it past the keeper. Ian Stockham then followed that up with back-to-back rips down the right side to put Waterford up 3-0. Brock McKinney was then able to scoop up a deflection while on man-up and send it in past the keeper. James Packer then won the faceoff, pushed a fast-break, and scored in the transition. Soon after, Dallin Bentley found Logan Dempsey open on crease with a finish to get the game within 1, Waterford up 4-3. Another hard shot past the keeper by Ian Stockham put Waterford up 5-3 with very little time left in the first half. Bingham was then able to push a fast clear and get a shot in past the goalie as the horn went off; the officials decided it had made it past the line just in time, making it a 5-4 Waterford lead going into halftime. Both teams had possessed very well, and it had been a game of runs so far, with neither team letting the other have control of the momentum.
Talbot Child started off the second half with a quick goal for Waterford to put them up 6-4. Dallin Bentley soon answered back though for Bingham going one-on-one from the top of the box, getting a step on his defender, and sending a rip past the goalie. Then Tyler Monson found Brock McKinney open at the top of the box who sent in the tying goal for Bingham to even it at 6-6. With the momentum seeming to tilt into Bingham’s favor, Talbot Child was able to get open in transition and regain the lead for Waterford. Nick Winters was then able to get open again at the top of the box to send another hard shot in past the keeper and give Waterford an 8-6 lead going into the 4th quarter.
Waterford plays Bonneville in the class B Championship game on Saturday at 4:30 pm at Brighton High School.
