Matt Hearn passed away Thursday, July 13th, due to injuries sustained from rock climbing. Hearn was currently the offensive coordinator for East. East Head Coach Pete Idstrom was in shock when he heard the news.

“I just couldn’t believe it,” Idstrom said, “We’re pretty devastated right now.” One of Hearn’s former players, Jack Conley, shared similar sentiments. “It’s just devastating. It’s just hard on all the teammates.”
Hearn is well-remembered by the East program. “His lacrosse knowledge was off the charts,” said Idstrom. Hearn was named the Utah High School Lacrosse League’s Assistant Coach of the Year in 2017, showing the respect and admiration that his fellow coaches had. “He was well respected around here in a short amount of time,” Idstrom said. Not only was he gifted as a lacrosse player and coach, but he was a good mentor as well.
Idstrom added, “He was super involved. He had such a great relationship with the guys, he was their coach but he was really a big brother for a lot of them. He started coaching with me when the boys (class of 2019) were in 7th grade. I feel like he lifted everybody up. Not only the players, but the coaches as well.”
Conley echoed Idstrom’s praise, “It’s just hard to handle, because he brought light. Everything about Coach Hearn, he was always happy. We were just blessed to have him out there coaching with us and teaching us.”
Idstrom spoke of Hearn’s ability to encourage his players, “He never would get on them personally or make anything personal when players wouldn’t do what he wanted them to do. He was always very positive.” Idstrom adds somberly, “It’s a huge loss for us.”
Hearn hailed from Timonium, Maryland where he played high school lacrosse at Dulaney. Hearn featured at Essex Community College before transferring to Westminster for the 2012 season. Hearn had 42 goals and 13 assists for the Griffins in the 2012 campaign. Hearn was named as a captain in 2013 but was injured early in the season. Hearn had been working for KUTV for the past 3 years.
Idstrom and the East High team will be holding a private memorial service on Sunday for Hearn. Current East players and former players of Hearn are encouraged to attend.
