Royals To Face Soaring Eagle in Girls D-II Championship

The Girls D-II Semifinals saw the Juan Diego Soaring Eagle beat Viewmont, 10-9, and Roy take down Olympus, 9-6, at Alta High School on Tuesday.
The first game featured the No. 2 seeded Soaring Eagle versus the No. 3 Vikings in an evenly matched affair. Juan Diego jumped out to a quick two-goal lead with Camille Arceneaux and Blair Saunders finding the back of the net. Danni Westerman found space in the Soaring Eagle defense to give the Vikings its first goal of the game early in the half. The teams traded goals which led to Ellie Merrill capitalizing on a failed clear when she scooped up the ball and drove to the goal, dumping it in. Both teams scored two more goals to make the score 6-4 at halftime.
Viewmont would score 3 goals to 1 midway through the second half to tie the game at 7. Westerman led the charge with two goals. Both teams again traded goals until late in the half when Juan Diego went on a two goal run to make the score 10-8 with 5:53 left in the game. Viewmont would find space with 2:47 left when Rachel Smith converted her opportunity. Juan Diego went into stall mode and cruised to a 10-9 victory.
The second game was a defensive slug fest with goalies Hannah Fordham (Olympus) and Kennadi Varnell (Roy) keeping nearly everything out. Olympus scored the first goal of the game when Maclaine Ward found the back of the net. Eighteen minutes passed before the next goal when Regan Schleidt gave the Titans a two-goal lead. Varnell had 7 saves in that span including two free-position denials. Roy scored back-to-back goals late in the half by Breanna Bodle and Megan Lloyd to make the score 2-2 at halftime.
The second half opened up as the teams knew a berth to the championship game was on the line. Roy reeled off three straight goals to take a 5-2 lead midway through the half. Olympus answered with two of its own. Roy then put the game out of reach with a four goal run in a 2 minute time span, making the score 9-4. Olympus would go on to score two more goals late in the game, making the final score 9-6 for Roy.
The Soaring Eagle and Royals met earlier in the season with Juan Diego winning 15-4. Roy is no stranger to championship games, having won the D-II title last season.
